This is a great non-fiction book about whales. This book is great for young children that are learning about whales. With this book you can teach inferences about what the author is describing about the whale. The author uses lots of words that need interpretation and children can practice to infer. Children can learn interesting facts about whales and this book can be a good companion text to help children build background knowledge. ( )

Stunning use of text size and type (Centaur), along with the illustrations simple depictions done in pen, ink, and wash bring the reader along through a non-fiction piece that maintains a narrative feel. The information is given delicately and explicitly as the reader glides along the pages just as the Big Blue Whale glides through the waters. The story of the Big Blue Whale is told with an added piece of supporting facts on each page to give the reader a deeper understanding of this magnificent creature. ( )
