I read four that I thought were not just the best of the year--but the best I've ever read: Choke On the Eve The Old Man and the Sea Atonement

... of authors that I read but am not sure whether I like yet (the other prime example being Douglas Coupland). I loved Choke, didn't mind Diary which is generally considered one of his weakest and wished I'd not seen the film when I read Fight Club. But Rant created more mixed ...

Gosh, I didn't find Choke funny, so best I not try Snuff. I read a A Confederacy of Dunces some years ago, unfortunately after meeting someone rather like the character while I was in San Francisco. It coloured my perception of the book somewhat, as not only being a bit strange, he was a ...

... I'm not sure what to say about it. It is offensive and unpleasant with none of the cleverness of Fight Club or humour of Choke, and its "shock ending" was easy to see coming a mile off. I think I'll declare it a 'miss'. next up a book whose title screamed BUY ME when I saw it in remusly in What Are You Reading Now? : Book Brought Home - September 2009 (Sep 7, 2009, 12:54am)

... I'd recommend trying one other book by him before giving up. The people I've talked to tend to say Invisible Monsters and Choke are his other two great novels.

Can you belive that I can't find Choke at any of the 8 libraries that I can access?! The only ones they have is Haunted, Fight Club, Pygmy, Snuff, Rant, Stranger Than Fiction, Lullaby and Survivor.

Hey cal8769, From the ones that I have read, I highly recommend starting with Choke. The movie was not too bad either...

Just finished 1984. Continuing with On the Eve and Choke.

#138 Talbin Thanks for the review of Choke. there was a lot of buzz about the book on LT last year and I sort of had it on my "virtual" TBR. However, it definitely sounds like I would no enjoy this book so one less to worry about! :-)

I don't think I have read Choke yet, Tui. I was planning to, but never felt the time was right. He is a very punchy writer.

Kiwi, was it last year that you read Choke? We were having a discussion on another thread about it and I wondered what you had thought about it.

I just finished Philip Roth's The Plot Against America, which was okay but not great. I think I'll either read Choke by Chuck Palahniuk or Mosquito by Roma Tearne next (after cleaning the house, though :-( ).

On another thread, I picked on Chuck Palahniuk's Choke, but it doesn't really rank for me as the worst of Palahniuk's books (of which I've read 5). That title has to go to Haunted. It has many of the same flaws as Choke, but manages to be aggressively unpleasant to boot. The nicest thing ...

#20, well, I came to Choke after a couple of other Palahniuk books, including Haunted which deserves a mention elsewhere, so I already had some level of skepticism, which Choke ran right into. And I have to admit, I didn't find the main character repulsive so much as pathetic. The book ...

#5 arthur, your description of Confederacy of Dunces reminds me of Palahniuk's Choke which some people seem to consider as among his better works. I'm not sure why. The book struck me as dishonest, sentimental, and in love with its own outrageousness--qualities it shares with its narrator.

37) Choke by Chuck Palahniuk I'm not a huge Palahniuk fan, even though I've read most of his books, but I did enjoy this one more than the others I have read. My boyfriend is a huge fan of his and plans on taking me to see the movie soon, so I'm glad I got the book in first.
