Though it misses on a few facts -- the first Beatles record played on US radio was not Baltimore, on a tape sent from England, but on a Chicago station in September-October, 1963, when the only US releases available were on the small independent Chicago label Vee-Jay; and on WBZ-AM, Boston, Massachusetts, during the last three weeks of December, 1963, with both "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and the Vee-Jay version ("1-2-3-FAH! . . .") of "I Saw Her Standing There". WBZ DJ Dick Summer presented the Vee-Jay version as being the "B"-side of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (which it would turn out was on Capital). He also characterized them as, "The latest 'big thing' in England," and said, "I don't think these guys are going anywhere."

Other than that, it is the one biography which actually and accurately captures the feel of "Beatlemania".

This is an all-around good book about the Beatles, one of many that I read back when I was a huge fan. ( )

UPDATED TO INCLUDE PAUL McCARTNEY'S KNIGHTING AND THE DEATHS OF JOHN LENNON AND GEORGE HARRISON

Philip Norman's biography of the Beatles is the definitive work on the world's most influential band -- a beautifully written account of their lives, their music, and their times. Now brought completely up to date, this epic tale charts the rise of four scruffy Liverpool lads from their wild, often comical early days to the astonishing heights of Beatlemania, from the chaos of Apple and the collapse of hippy idealism to the band's acrimonious split. It also describes their struggle to escape the smothering Beatles' legacy and the tragic deaths of John Lennon and George Harrison. Witty, insightful, and moving, Shout! is essential reading not just for Beatles fans but for anyone with an interest in pop music.
