The Dark Staff Series - Book III Reluctantly leaving behind Brendan's world and their friends, Abby and Tristan follow a path into a darkness lit by diamonds, and find themselves in a place where magic is rarely known, and where evil doesn't always need the impetus of the Kiya to grow strong. But magic draws magic, even here -- and they are dropped into the care of a startled ship's captain -- who also happens to be a very powerful mage.In order to track down and trap the Kiya, they join forces with an unusual array of allies, including the captain-mage, a smuggler who once held the Kiya -- and threw her away -- and a prince of questionable character. Meanwhile, Tabor plays at a dangerous game with his demon father and the less than human High Priest, Braith. In an attempt to gain power of his own and free himself from his father's sadistic control, he secretly employs magics that help him stay a step ahead of the others in an attempt to gain the Kiya before Abby and Tristan collect yet another part of the prize. Told mostly from the locals point of view it is fast paced and as fun as the rest of the series, if somewhat narrow focused and short. Again the long opening sequence establishing the characters seems a bit unnecessary as we know these people will be of little consequence in the wider storyline. The two central captains - interstellar traders come across well, but the attempts to provide some diversity of crew don't really manage to establish themselves. I kept forgetting which crew memebers had what abilities as they occured so seldom. Fortunetly it wasn't necessary to remember on which of the otherwise similar ships they served on. Again the 'bad guys' other than the demons had no real reason for being eveil which also seems somewhat unlikely. But it worked, more or less. Tabor remanis the most interesting character by some margin adn I hope for him to manage to make some decision for himself in the future.
The interweaving of magic and science wasn't handled as well as it could have been. This was an area I'd been looking forward to in the opening concept of a multiverse novel. How do cahracters sustained on magic cope int he magic low zones. How does thei magic influence the local technology and people. But very little was made of this, there was a moon it had the same magic, most people just ignored it, end of. A lot more could have been done in this area - an ambitious book would have drawn parallels into modern society, but perhaps that is asking too mcuh from this series.
Fun, and the writing between character jumps is engaging. I'll continue to read the series, if Only to find out about Tabor. ( )
