A British diplomat, Peter Darwin, makes friends quickly. His diplomatic training makes him good at solving problems. The combination of these two traits gets Peter involved in finding out why so many horses using the same veterinary clinic—specifically those operated on by the same surgeon (Peter’s friend)—are dying. Human bodies begin to pile up as Peter unravels the mystery which is linked to insurance fraud. In solving the current mystery, Peter also solves the mystery of his friend’s father committed suicide 20 years earlier. Francis provides an enjoyable English mystery with a lot of interesting supporting characters including a romantic interest for Peter. ( )

I really enjoyed this one. Peter Darwin in a diplomat recently posted back home to England after several years in Japan. He makes the acquaintance of some fellow Brits who are mugged. They are both pretty shaken and are glad for his help when they make it to England. But the troubles are only beginning. Darwin is soon involved in sorting out some malicious mischief at a vet's surgery. I liked this one a lot. ( )

One of my favourites - Peter Darwin is a diplomat back in the town of his childhood (Cheltenham) helping a local vetinary surgeon work out why so many horses have died on the table recently. The story unfolds as Darwin's long forgotten childhood memories are stirred up and help steer him towards the secrets and hidden motives of the various players involved. A great fun read with an interesting cast of characters and excellent interplay between them all. ( )

Peter Darwin, a diplomat home on leave, investigates a disaster at the local veterinary surgeon's office, and uncovers a mystery from the past. Likeable hero, interesting background re. diplomats and veterinarians. A good one to re-read every couple of years. ( )
