What a cute story. Benjy’s family is going on a boat trip but Benjy has to stay behind with the children’s aunt. But Benjy really wants to go, so he stows away. Unfortunately he is on the wrong ship, but he is such a sweet dog, he makes friends anyway. And when the ship returns to port, Benjy finds his family again. A lovely story that stands the test of time.

Genre: This is a modern fantasy book, because even though the truth about the book is that dogs sometimes get left behind on family vacations, this particular situation could not happen in real life. A dog and cat could not meet and get away with being on a cruise ship throughout the whole voyage wandering the ship. The cat would not get stuck in a crow's nest and the dog would not be allowed in a ship's kitchen because of sanitary reasons. It's a cute story but definitely not realistic.

The media used for the artwork looks like colored pencil and charcoal. The drawings are simplistic but very realistic. The ships especially are nice and big for young readers - actually the whole pictures take up most of the pages, which is nice for those teachers reading to a class on the carpet or a larger audience of listeners. The dog is easy to follow along with both in the story and in the picture and the artwork makes it easy to imagine. ( )
