As I follow The Daily Coyote blog, this book was a must read for me. Shreve is a fasinating person and her devotion to Charlie the coyote is amazing. It was so interesting to read about the progression of her relationship with Charlie from pup to full grown coyote.I love the way she writes, with such honesty and deep thought.I would recommend this book highly, whether you love animals or not! I loved this book and have joined her blog. I have come to care for both Charlie and Eli. A wonderful story of love, courage and dedication ( )

Shreve Stockton, a photographer, author, and city girl, falls in love with rural Wyoming while traveling cross country. She moves to a tiny Wyoming town, lives in a little ramshackle cabin, and begins dating a rancher who also hunts and kills coyotes for the government. He shows up one day with a coyote cub for her, and Shreve keeps it, thereby changing her life quite a bit. The details of her life so far with the coyote, Charley, are fascinating. The author has a blog, The Daily Coyote, for readers who want more gorgeous photos of Charley. Great animal memoir read. ( )

A fascinating book about a tiny coyote pup unaccountably rescued by the author's boyfriend (a coyote hunter who, after scooping up the pup, proceeds to kill its siblings in their den) and is hand-raised by her. Charlie is an extraordinary character--outrageously happy, playful, intelligent and demanding--as is his "brother," the barn cat Eli. The photographs of them playing and lounging together are priceless. The photographs of the stark landscape around Ten Sleep, with the Big Horns in the distance, are equally compelling. Less impressively drawn are the humans, and too much time is spent on the relationship without much insight as payoff. Stockton doesn't write well about her boyfriend, her recreated dialog is attrocious, and she's more interested in herself than I was. But the photographs are magnificent, and so is the mercurial Charlie. I can't wait to catch up with him on dailycoyote.net. ( )

Wonderful pictures and great descriptions of the location, but overall I didn't care much for the author and I didn't agree with some of her choices. Seemed like she was non-commital with raising Charlie...she wanted him to retain his 'wildness', but yet wanted him to behave as a PET. Regardless, an entertaining story and heartwarming from a sense of how much animals can mean to their 'owners'... ( )
