A mixed bag of a book, the characters are great, the story is quite good but it just didn't seem to flow. It felt like book two in a series and sometimes felt a bit clunky. I really liked the werewolf character but he felt a little paper thin.

In this world vampires are a parasite who enslave and eventually kill their hosts, the bite creates a call to the Thrall. Kate Reilly is fighting the call but the fight has changed her, added powers to her life. ( )

I saw what other people have reviewed and I wasn't looking to enjoy this book, but you know what, I did and I really got to like Kate and her family and Tom, ohh Tom!

THe book starts off looking at some of Kate's earlier actions, which is referred to through all the other books as well.

The Thrall were believable, parasites that infect you and take over, eventually killing the host., different but good!

I liked this so much, I picked up the others in the series. ( )

The story and characters are good. They deserve better than this canned romance treatment.

The writing is mediocre at best. Nothing is left to the reader's imagination, including how the heroin cooks and parks her car. The romance and sex scenes are straight out of a can.

Despite this, I read the entire book, because the characters do have some life (except the perfect boyfriend, who also came out of a can), and the story is mostly good.

Obviously this is a beginning of a series, but it will continue without me. ( )

Turns out I downloaded this as part of the Tor ebook freebie, and thank goodness for that. The first chapter was pure info-dump, to the point that I had a quick google to see if I'd missed an earlier book in the serie (I've been known to buy book 2 by mistake from Fictionwise!). I hated the first chapter, and the first few screens of the second did nothing to improve the situation so I gladly deleted it. Very happy I didn't spend actual dosh on this one. ( )

The werewolves in this story were interesting, as were the parasitic vampires, but overall I didn't enjoy it. It was clearly the setup novel for a series, and I don't care enough about any of the characters to read further.

The romance has little subtlety and less chemistry, and every single male character has bulging muscles somewhere. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0765354004, Mass Market Paperback)

Kate Reilly has a hard time trusting people.

Six years ago, the love of her life turned her over to the vampire parasites who call themselves the Thrall. Katie survives the powerful bite of the master parasite only to discover that the Thrall’s venom, coupled with her own natural psychic ability, has transformed her. Now she is next in line to be the Thrall Queen--and each day might be her last as a human.

Tom, a handsome firefighter, arouses all of Katie’s dormant senses, but her heart shies away. After Dylan’s betrayal, how can she trust any man—even a seemingly perfect and terribly sexy werewolf?

Tom’s sincerity--and sex appeal--begins to wear down Katie’s defenses. But his increasingly insistent charm hides a potentially deadly secret: his werewolf pack is hiding the one person who can stop the Thrall from completing Katie's transformation into Queen--and they won't give her up.
