Former SAS Captain Tom Jackson is a man with nothing to lose. A veteran of the most dangerous missions the Regiment could throw at him, his life was torn apart the day a terrorist attack killed his family. Now he leads a life of grief-stricken obscurity, the world of warfare nothing but a distant memory. People higher up the chain of command have other plans, however. They're in a mess of their own making, and unless they sort it out, thousands of innocent people will pay the price. And so they make Jackson an offer he can't refuse. An offer that will take him straight back into a brutal theatre of war. Only one person can help prevent the disaster that is waiting to happen, and that person is being held by the Taliban insurgency in the depths of a harsh Afghanistan winter. As Tom reluctantly prepares to undertake this final mission, he does so in the knowledge that it will stop a devastating terrorist attack - as well as achieve an ulterior motive of his own. As events begin to unfold, he starts to suspect that someone, somewhere is playing a game with him; that nobody can be trusted; and that in the murky world of international terrorism, things are very seldom quite what they seem...… (more)

Shady spy agencies, a CIA operative gone rogue, a SAS soldier out of the game for two years, a sister split apart from her brother by circumstances and an imminent terrorist attack - these are the basic elements that form the plot of this book.

The best way to describe this book would be to compare it to an excellent action movie - it's fast paced, exciting, detailed and you can barely put it down. At 343 pages (2008 Century PB issue) it's the average length for a book these days but the drama and action has you turning page after page long after you should have gone to bed.

Would definitely read more Chris Ryan. ( )

I thought this book was thrilling and exciting the whole way through. There are some slow bits but are easily over looked because of the good action moments. ( )

This was great, in that I picked it up and read it and now I've put it down again. There is an ex-SAS soldier with a grudge and there is a muslim terrorist. There are lots of guns and dodgy CIA agents. It's simple and straightforward and doesn't pretend otherwise. It was nice to read something I didn't have to put too much thought into! If you are looking for a deep-thinking literary masterpiece then you're in the wrong place, but for simple action/thriller fiction it's pretty much on the button. ( )

A terrorist attack. A killer on the loose. And a final, desperate mission . . . Former SAS Captain, Tom Jackson, is a man with nothing to lose. A veteran of the most dangerous missions the Regiment could throw at him, his life was torn apart the day a terrorist attack killed his family. Now he grieves in obscurity, the world of warfare nothing but a distant memory. However, people higher up the chain of command have other plans for Jackson. They are in a mess of their own making, and make him an offer he can't refuse an offer that will take him back into the brutal theatre of war. There's a disaster waiting to happen, which only one person can help prevent, and that person is being held by the Taliban insurgency in the depths of a harsh Afghanistan winter. As Tom reluctantly prepares for this final mission, he does so in the knowledge that it will stop a devastating terrorist attack as well as satisfy an ulterior motive of his own. But as events begin to unfold, Tom suspects that someone is playing a game with him; that nobody can be trusted; and that in the murky world of international terrorism, things are seldom what they seem . . .
