... disadvantaged kids. I need to get books for age group (10-14) and for (14-18). For the 10-14, I was going to get Ella Enchanted, but I don't know whether they'll be going to boys or girls, so I'd like something with cross-gender appeal. Any suggestions for those age groups? They ...

... so I'd try it out. I do know some people who didn't enjoy them, but those who do love Anne (like me) love her forever. Ella Enchanted is one of my all-time faves!!! If it's a bit too long (not sure what her reading level's like, but Ella's pretty long) Gail Caron Levine has some great ...

... person. My favorite is Time Enough for Drums about the American Revolution. And when I was about that age, I adored Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine and Beauty by Robin McKinley - both retold fairy tales. Hope this helps :-)

Holes and Ella Enchanted. The books were better although in the case of Holes I also liked the movie. Off hand, I can't think of any cases where I liked the movie better than the book...

... in the books until after I saw the movie. Needless to say the books were much better :-) I also saw the movie of Ella Enchanted before I read the book. In that case I actually enjoyed the movie more than the book.

... really have been a lot of terrible film adaptations of children's books, haven't there? I have refused to see the film of Ella Enchanted. Lovely book, but I have not heard a single good thing about the film from other fans of the book. And I didn't even know there was a film of the Earthsea ...

... A dictionary next to a book isn't working, takes to much time and breaks the story up in chunks. I might check out Ella Enchanted, but it has a strong fantasy theme and for some reason she doesn't like those. I can't really find out why, she doesn't give very clear answers (shy, very, ...

it's a little younger but it's been my fave since i was in middle school Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson and the only other book besides Wicked that I enjoyed by Gregory Maguire: Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister

I agree that Ella Enchanted is truly terrible. I was actually talking about this adaptation just yesterday!

... the first three Enchanted Forest books, and am just biding my time until I can pick up Talking To Dragons. I also bought Ella Enchanted not long ago, but haven't read it yet. City of Bones has an interesting premise, but the cover is one of the worst I have ever seen, and there are a few ...

... Pierce's fantasy. The Alanna series is my favorite, but there are a number who disagree. You also might want to try Ella Enchanted as a fairy tale retelling.

    >15 I second The Book of Night with Moon. I also loved Morwen's cats in Patricia Wrede's Enchanted Forest Series. They had such character, and such great names.

... if you haven't already. I just finished Fairest by Gail Carson Levine and it's pretty good, not as good as Ella Enchanted by still a nice little read. The next books on my list are Elsewhere and Magyk

... everything by Judith Tarr. 7. Fairest - Gail Carson Levine The was a great children's book, a kind of sequel to Ella Enchanted about the land of Ayortha. 8. The Two Princesses of Bamarre - Gail Carson Levine I really like Levine, she has a great sense of storytelling. I ...

... in which Charmed is one of the novels. These were some of the first Nora Roberts that I kept and reread eventually. Enchanted was a follow-up story to the original trilogy and featured Liam Donovan. (Sometimes Liam runs as a wolf.)

... thought the adaptation of Holes was satisfactory. My least favorite adaptations would have to be The Princess Bride, Ella Enchanted, and the Harry Potter Movies, which deviated far too much from the original works, especially Ella Enchanted. That movie was insufferable, with the amount ...

I second the Ella Enchanted movie. That was just plain bizarre.

I hated Ella Enchanted the movie. Great kids' book, terrible, terrible movie. The adaptation of the Hobbit has to up there, although it's pretty fun to watch in a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 way, making fun of it (I mean, just look at Thranduil!) I also hated the Jim Carrey How the Grinch Sto ...

Gail Carson Levine has a new book out, Fairest. It is based on Snow White...I enjoyed it as much as Ella Enchanted although it took me a while to get into it. The True Story of the Three Little Pigs is a great twist on the Three Little Pigs. :-)

... catalogued, like Down and Out in Paris and London. And on the unsuggester page is the pairing of Orientalism with Ella Enchanted, both of which I loved. I feel like the unsuggestions don't quite get at the diversity of many people's book collections--in fact, they work on the opposite ...

... totally worth it. d_rholambda - I'll be interested to see what you think of Fairest, I enjoyed it, but not as much as Ella Enchanted and the singing kinda got on my nerves. Meaghan - I have to good-naturedly disagree with you, I liked Alaska much more than Katherines, it was one of the ...

Wow, I love Dmitri too. But I'm partial to John Cusack anyway. As for YA characters, I always liked Charming from Ella Enchanted, Sirius Black from Harry Potter, Laurie (Little Women), and John Reid (Time Enough for Drums). I'm sure I'll think of many more later, though.

... particularly Bartimaeus, his voice is just perfect. Also just finished Gail Carson Levine's latest, Fairest. It's no Ella Enchanted, but definitely worth the read.

I loved Ella Enchanted and The Princess Bride (does that count as a children's book?). And also Holes was a great movie, but I never read the book.

... number of reasons, though... The Historian was too creepy to listen to after dark (I'm a giant weenie), so I had to start Ella Enchanted to have something lighter to listen to at night. ... times that I adore. Currently I have quite a few Gregory Maguire books (which aren't exactly kidslit, I know), and Ella Enchanted. Anyone want to rec others? Talk about why these things are so darn fascinating?

I have to disagree about Ella Enchanted. I was in love with the books when I read it two years before the movie came out, and the movie seemed to make fun of the book. On the other hand, I fell in love with the movie Big Fish, and afterwards the book seemed lame, wandering, and ...

... about 2/3 of the way through - which also happened to be the point at which my iPod crapped out on me. Moving on to Ella Enchanted for a light kiddielit break before tackling Angela's Ashes. I wish I had more time to read my non-audiobook, Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay, because I'm ...

... it... I'm nearing the end, though, so I'll tough it out and hopefully it'll pick up again. I also started listening to Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine, for when The Historian got too creepy to listen to at night and I needed something a bit fluffy.

... Beauty, the One Who Took the Really Long Nap. It's breezy, funny, and light-hearted. I really like retold fairy tales (Ella Enchanted, anyone?), especially ones with humor. The Twice Upon a Time books are also told with the alternating viewpoint technique-- one chapter "his story" (the Princ ...

... Personally I loved the movie The Bourne Identity but when I read the book I didn't like it quite as much. The same with Ella Enchanted. It is not that I disliked the books, I just felt more in tune with the movie. Interestingly in both of these cases I did see the movies before reading the ...
