However, the female protagonist, Lil Chance, reminded me of Eve in the J.D. Robb in both her thinking and speaking patterns. Roberts has a tendency to deliberately drop a word off the end of a sentence where it is clear what they word would be. She does this in both female characters. I did like that there was a lot of family in this book. Too often, romantic novels have a lack of parents, grandparents, etc, so the protagonist seems alone in the world and lacks family connections. Roberts doesn't do that, at least, not in this novel. ( )I am an avid Nora Roberts fan, but not so much after reading this title. It was long and drawn out. The story certainly could have been told in less than 480 pages. I would have liked to have seen more character development with Tansy and Farley. There was too much time spent on Lil saying no, but meaning yes. I wanted to be on the edge of my seat, but after reading 450+ pages, the climax was done in barely 5 pages. The end was abrupt and disappointing. I will always be a Nora Roberts reader, but I won't be recommending Black Hills. To say Cooper Sullivan is less than thrilled to find himself banished to the sticks - the Black Hills of South Dakota - for the summer while his parents attempt to save their marriage (and fail) is putting it mildly. But his grandparents and Lil Chance, a young neighbor, gradually change his mind. Flash forward a few years. Lil's dreams of a wild animal sanctuary have been realized, and Cooper's back, as well. But all is not as idyllic as the scenery. A stalker is bent on wrecking havoc, and he's leaving a trail of bodies in his wake. His next target seems to be the sanctuary and Lil. Can she and Cooper mend their fences enough to survive? The plot is vintage Roberts. The setting is lovely. As to how accurate her depiction of the goings on at an animal sanctuary might be? Well, let's just say it's fiction and leave it at that. Starts when the main characters are 10 & 11 and become friends in South Dakota's Black Hills. Jumps to the summer between her high school and college, when they become lovers. They discover the body of a serial killer's victim. Jumps 12 years, then starts the main story. Lil Chance created and runs a big cat, especially cougar, wildlife habitat -- Chance Wildlife Refuge. Cooper Sullivan has quit the New York police department. As the love story develops, the serial killer hunts them -- then they hunt him. Very good read. I liked the story a lot. Reminded me of Montana Sky a bit though... no reviews | add a review
