World War Z is a surprise when you think of the stereotypical zombie book. The Zombie Survival Guide is a different book from World War Z so liking one doesn't necessarily mean liking the other. World War Z will appeal to a wider audience than the Survival Guide. World War Z:An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks. TBR shelves. I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed World War Z. I think I am going to skip The Zombie Survival Guide though. ... some parts seem well thought out and others not so much. Good, but not the same caliber as World war Z.

Amusing observation (at least to me) - three of my choices have titles that have something to do ... ... surprise of liking a book that I would not think I would have liked, don't you? That happened to me last year with World War Z, a book I would never have picked up on my own without the encouragement of the group here on LT and I ended up loving it. You just never know. I haven't read World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War but I have read Z for Zachariah I haven't read Indiana Jones and the Peril at Delphi but I have read World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War ... more like those to recommend. Heh heh.

It is subtitled "An Oral History of the Zombie War" and that is pretty much exactly what you get.
It is alternately incredibly entertaining and disturbingly plausible (okay not so much the zombies themselves but the inept and self-destructive ways world ... ... two books that could not be more different - Kristin Lavransdatter (historical fiction set in Medieval Norway) and World War Z (sci-fi set in the future after the zombie apocalypse). Both quite good, but switching between the two is very confusing! "I heard his gun go off as I started the engine." from World War Z by Max Brooks. I haven't read "The Walking Dead" series and, although I have read World War Z, Patient Zero, and a couple of zombie anthologies, I don't tend to read a lot of zombie fiction. Most of what I have read has been post-Breathers.
The main reason I stayed away from zombie ficiton was because I ... ... Man from Glengarry - Ralph Connor

Plus, the other day I found a copy of Anne of the Island from 1934!! Another lovely day. :) #10: I loved World War Z when I read it last year, too, much to my surprise! And there goes number 52: World War Z by Max Brooks. A real novel idea to have an oral history about such a fictitious event (if there are anymore, I am very interested!). I loved the descriptions, and how you are still able to piece everything together. I highly recommend it, it is not ... #200 divinenanny, have you read I am Legend yet? If you liked World War Z I think you would like that one. It's a pretty quick read. You will want something else to go on to within a day or two. I finished World War Z a couple days ago and still can't believe how much I enjoyed it. This is by no means a great book, but it is a good one. I have pretty much always avoided books about vampires and zombies - just not my thing. But after seeing positive mentions of World War Z off and on I ... ... I love discovering the goodies among the dreck. Thanks for the tips.
Due in part to Aerrin99's enthusiasm I picked up World War Z at the library yesterday and started it, despite being mid-read in other books. Glad I did. I really enjoyed World War Z by Brooks (surprising), so maybe I should try The Zombie Survival Guide, too. Hmmm. > 37 I meant that I was reading the friend's gifted copy of World War Z actually.
I think you're right about Mieville's 'affect', and although I enjoyed Perdido Street Station well enough, I don't know that I'd ever love it enough to want it on my shelf. He doesn't seem like a 'rereadable' ... > 34 Good to know! I might dig into it next, then - I felt like I needed a bit of a Mieville break and am re-reading World War Z.
I bought the copy as a gift for a friend... he was kind enough to tell me I could read it before I mailed it to him. This probably means I need my own copy, huh?
I'm not a zombie person either, but I really liked World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War. It was like a Studs Terkel of a fictional history. I could see Pride and Prejudice with zombies being really enjoyable. ... I seem to be in the minority based on reviews I've read elsewhere about this one, but it just didn't do much for me.

22. T ... I'm still on City of Bones and World War Z, and I've started Fire Watch. World War Z has to be taken in small chunks or I'll go crazy. I'm already in an odd state (thesis and everything that goes with it) at the moment, so it's not the best thing to be reading. World War Z is also sort of radio play-ish with several big names as the readers.
Or maybe look for titles that are narrated by celebrities. Ed Asner, Stockard Channing have both done some narrating but they were both children's books. World War Z is about survival. It's the oral accounts of different people about their experiences of the Zombie Apocalypse. In the same note, The Zombie Survival Guide is a fictional guide on how to protect yourself from zombies. I've just picked up World War Z to read again. Cue nightmares in 3... 2... 1... Time to break up the thread again...it's getting a bit unwieldy.

And although not /strictly/ post-apoc, I suppose, I loved World War Z, and it certainly had the same feel to it. So if you like zombies at all...
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go start adding the rest of these books to my ... ... LTers. Thanks for the recommendations. Next thing you know, I will be after Patrick O'Brian books! :) My daughter got World War Z -- another zombie book! I don't know how she reads them. Zombies totally creep me out! Fun apocalyptic horror with of-the-moment political savvy and plenty of vivid nightmare images. Told in a reportorial style from the view of various survivors.
