I liked the idea of Artemis Fowl, but I just didn't find the writing very gripping. It seemed a bit flat and overly simplistic. Probably the only YA book I have tried to read and had to stop reading was Artemis Fowl. By chapter three I was groaning and dreading each sentence. My belief could only be suspended so much.
Regarding Octavian Nothing, I absolutely loved the book! To me, it was the epitome of the ultimate ... ... finished book. Given how notoriously disorganised he was, this might be a forlorn hope.

No, not Artemis Fowl. #142 I love the Artemis Fowl series! I'm so excited about the latest one and can't wait to read it. I've got it on reserve at the library, but I'm about No. 241 in line with only about 5 books available, so I'm thinking I'm going to have to go out and buy it.

Alcatraz is young adult fun more like Artemis Fowl but with more outrageousness. I absolutely loved it. Elantris was good but Mistborn is decidedly MUCH better. Currently Elantris is a stand-alone novel. If ... ... the local library, but the last one before this was with Eoin Colfer. I took my daughter to that because she's a huge Artemis Fowl fan too. We waited forever, but it was so much fun. She called a friend on the way home and bragged about her brand new copy of Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony. ... ... current favorite. I also think that both girls in her stand-alone novel Judas Child are amazing.

Skulduggery Pleasant - I think it's actually children's but I enjoyed it heaps.
Kiki Strike - Love. And I think the sequel is coming out soon, ... ... hour, the twenty-fifth hour of day, along with some harrowing creatures who were banished to that hour millenia ago.
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer; I mainly read this because of reader's advisory. I have no desire to read any of the sequels. Just not my cup of tea...
and yet for some ... I would put the whole Artemis Fowl series in this category. I couldn't read a book in an afternoon myself, but it's a fun, light read.
You might also try Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching series: The Wee Free Men, Hat Full of Sky, and Wintersmith.

I love the Artemis Fowl books too, they're great! It was neat to see Nathaniel Parker in Stardust, even though his role was a little small. how about Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer there fun books and he has 5 of them so far, and I think you'd like them as well. The Artemis Fowl series. It's not a trilogy, but it has plenty of nice scientific touches and you could happily disregard anything after The Eternity Code. So far this year I've "read" three on audio: Team of Rivals, the political genius of Abraham Lincoln, Artemis Fowl, and Twilight. All were excellent, all unabridged, and, imho, none were lacking for having been listened to rather than read. I read quite a bit - as I'm sure many of you here do - but I really need to tackle some more "serious" books.
I would love suggestions on what to read that is 1) not a romance novel 2) not so complicated it can't be read easily and 3) interesting! Any ideas?

The closest Harry Potterlike series I've read though quite a bit lighter is Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl I adore the Artemis Fowl books and although I have no children of my own, I have young nieces and nephews. I'd recommend them for kids of Artemis' own age (he's 12 at the start of the series), as they'll be able to identify with him a lot better. When the kids in my family reach that age, they'll ... Artemis Fowl just never hooked me. I know it isn't YA, but, honestly, the Dresden Files does the whole magic mixing with technology and the modern world, and does it a lot ... I strongly disliked Artemis Fowl; the story was pointless and the characters unlikable.
I did not like Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging; it was hardly as funny as proclaimed by my school librarian when she told me to check it out.
