50 Ways to Save the Earth is a spectacularly illustrated book consisting of information on ecology and ways in which readers can help to lessen the impact humans have upon the planet. The illustrations chosen consist of stunning photographs of the natural world taken by Philippe Bourseiller. The text details the 50 suggested activities on one or two pages each, providing an overview of the situation that is being addressed and then giving an idea for how the reader can contribute to solving the problem. While the text is filled with illustrative stories and statistics, Jankeliowitch does not supply either citations or a bibliography to describe her research. Many of the ideas described in the book – such as recycling, turning off lights, and not smoking – will not be news to children. The main appeal of the book will be its photographs. This book could be useful in either a public library or middle school media center, but is not a smart buy if the collection budget is tight. ( )
