Patrick McNierney, Penguin Group, selected The Manual of Detection by Jedediah Berry (Penguin Press, February), a literary mystery with a very eccentric protagonist and highly unusual twists--a classic page-turner. Shelf Awareness 10/1/08

Okay, so this guy can write. I'm not really a mystery-head, but I love how he's playing with the genre and I love how he writes sentences. Go UMass! ( )

I'm bailing out of this one. I think that it's quite well-written, but it is so not for me with its incredibly mannered style, its comic-book characters, its over-the-top homage to writers I also can't read (Borges, Kafka, & etc.) that I just can't bring myself to turn another page.

Reminded me of a soulless version of [b:The Intuitionist|16271|The Intuitionist A Novel|Colson Whitehead|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1166720297s/16271.jpg|1632284]. I didn't hate it, but I haven't felt like picking it up again. And so, in the sprit of starting the new year with a clean slate, I am giving it up.

I pretty much read this because I thought the cover was amazing. I wasn't terribly impressed with the story. I do feel like I missed a lot. Also I'm not really a mystery reader so maybe that is why I didn't enjoy it too much. But the cover is AWESOME! ( )

Book description
Armed with only an umbrella and a curious handbook, an unlikely detective must untangle a string of crimes committed in and through people's dreams

In an unnamed city always slick with rain, Charles Unwin toils as a clerk at a huge, imperious detective agency. But when the illustrious detective Travis Sivart turns up murdered, Unwin is suddenly promoted to detective and must solve the mystery himself, aided only by the Manual of Detective. Sivart's greatest cases—including The Three Deaths of Colonel Baker and The Man Who Stole November Twelfth—it turns out, were solved incorrectly, and Unwin must enter the dreams of a murdered man and face a criminal mastermind bent on total control of a slumbering city.

Set in an engrossing dreamworld, The Manual of Detection draws comparisons to every work of imaginative fiction that ever blew a reader's mind—from Jorge Luis Borges to The Yiddish Policemen's Union. But ultimately it defies comparison; it is a brilliantly conceived, meticulously realized novel that will change what you think about how you think.
