Outlander by Diana Gabaldon (1991)

  1. 204
Into the Wilderness by Sara Donati (pollywannabook)
pollywannabook: The closest thing to Outlander out there. Diana Gabaldon even lent out the character of Claire for a cameo in this book
  2. 111
The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley (Iudita)
  3. 40
The River of No Return: a Novel by Bee Ridgway (redheadedali)
  4. 40
The House on the Strand by Daphne Du Maurier (aynar)
aynar: Much better example of time travel.
  5. 73
    Timeline by Michael Crichton (leahsimone)
  6. 30
Wildfire at Midnight by Mary Stewart (LiddyGally)
LiddyGally: I recommend this book because the writing styles are in a similar vein rather than the stories being the same. Both, however, are set in the wilds of Scotland.
  7. 118
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness (Anonymous user, SunnySD)
  8. 41
The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons (littlebear514)
littlebear514: Although the stories are COMPLETELY different; the writing is of the same quality and the stories are both deeply involved.
  9. 20
    Overseas by Beatriz Williams (becksdakex)
    becksdakex: Romance and time travel.
  10. 10
The Legend of Lady MacLaoch by Becky Banks (elbakerone)
elbakerone: Though Banks' novel is set in present day (and is considerably shorter), the love story with the gorgeous backdrop of Scotland was reminiscent of Gabaldon's series.
  11. 10
The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley (jennyj271)
  12. 10
The Dark Queen by Susan Carroll (infiniteletters)

The Firebird by Susanna Kearsley (LAKobow)
LAKobow: Also involves elements of realism mixed with fantasy, Scotland, romance, and historical fiction.

Historical Fiction

It's not necessarily a /good/ book, but a very fun mixture of well-researched historical fiction, romance, fantasy and adventure. Had lots of fun reading this.
As a bonus, I think the inner voice of Claire is very... insightful. Gabaldon describes personal emotions, thoughts and feelings that I rarely find in books. You might think me pretentious for saying so, but those passages reminded me of War and Peace. Sorry. ( )

I'm addicted! Hungrily searching for the next book in this amazing series!!!! ( )

A little too romance novel-esque after the initial story develops, left me wanting more Scottish lore and such. Don't care for the excessive violence against both of the protagonists either.

First book for Pilgrimage Book Club. Book is a fantasy adventure about a woman who suddenly finds herself in 1700 Scotland. A clever way to get us intrigued with how she copes with new enviornment and the adventures in which she is involved. KIRKUS REVIEWOnce-in-a-lifetime romantic passion and graphically depicted torture sessions are only the two extremes of this lively time- travel romance set in 18th-century Scotland--an imaginative and lighthearted debut by a promising newcomer. World War II has finally ended and Claire Beauchamp Randall, a British Red Cross nurse, has gone off to Scotland with her historian husband, Frank, to try to resume their married life where it left off six years before. Their diligent attempts to make a baby come to a halt, however, when Claire discovers an ancient stone circle on a nearby hilltop, slips between two mysterious- looking boulders, and is transported willy-nilly to the year 1743. Stumbling down the hillside, disoriented and confused, Claire is discovered by Jonathan ``Black Jack'' Randall, an evil English officer who happens to be her husband's direct ancestor and physical look-alike. Randall notes Claire's revealing 1940's summer dress, assumes she is a whore, and attempts to rape her, whereupon she is rescued by the fierce MacKenzie clan, who take her to their castle and confine her there. Claire adjusts to her changed circumstances with amazing ease, using her nursing experience to tend to her hosts' illnesses while she impatiently awaits a chance to return to the circle of stones. Before she can get away, circumstances force her into a marriage with James Frazer, a Scottish renegade from English justice and Jonathan Randall's archenemy. Young Jamie's good looks, passion, and virility soon redirect Claire's energies to defending her stalwart new husband against her former mate's evil clone, and the fierce, courageous but historically doomed Scottish clans against the course of destiny itself. A satisfying treat, with extra scoops of excitement and romance that make up for certain lapses in credibility.Pub Date: July 1st, 1991ISBN: 0-385-30230-4Page count: 640ppPublisher: DelacorteReview Posted Online: May 20th, 2010Kirkus Reviews Issue: June 1st, 1991

Epigraph
People disappear all the time. Ask any policeman. Better yet, ask a journalist. Disappearances are bread-and-butter to journalists.
Young girls run away from home. Young children stray from their parents and are never seen again. Housewives reach the end of their tether and take the grocery money and a taxi to the station. International financiers change their names and vanish into the smoke of imported cigars.
Many of the lost will be found, eventually, dead or alive. Disappearances, after all, have explanations.
Usually.
