"Have I not . . . just been . . . saying so?" Outlander by Diana Gabaldon "Why didn't you tell me before?"

Book 26 Outlander by Diana Gabaldon I am the last person to admit having read a romance novel. But this is a fabulous mix of romance, action-adventure and historical-fiction. The first in a series of 7 (so far), Diana has painted the perfect picture of 18th Century Scotland. Claire is ...

... a link to your next years challenge so we don't miss it. Happy reading a have a great vacation in PR, I'm so jealous! Outlander and The Help are very different books, but each very good and easy enough reads for vacation books. You know, the kind that don't take intense concentration to ...

I'm glad you enjoyed Leviathan and Just Listen; both are by very talented YA authors, so yay! And The Help and Outlander are definitely going with me to Puerto Rico in January. Looking forward to discussing books with you next year as well!

... Help -- I read it in the middle of my semester, ignoring all school work because I couldn't put it down. I've also had Outlander in my pile for awhile. Maybe I'll move it up!

... particular slate clean. Book No. 97 (see #303) as I said, was crap. Sheer and utter crap. Another dreadful piece of Outlander spawn. 1/2 star 350 pages Book No. 98 - was quite good - more about grief than about teaching dogs to talk. The abuse of dogs by the nut job characters that ...

Re-Listening to Outlander by, Diana Gabaldon its been awhile and my bookclub is reading it for Jan. so I thought I'd refresh my memory and I just love the way Davina Porter reads them!

#115 I remember when I first read Outlander - probably '96 or '97. I couldn't put it down, and when I'd finished it I wished it had lasted longer. As you mentioned, a whole new kind of romance novel, different from anything I'd ever read before. It IS a wonderful book.

39. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon - 5 stars This was a re-read for me. I first read the book in January, 1994 and I gave it four stars then but now, I am upping that to 5 stars. In hindsight, this book is still a great story, a real page-turner and, to me, the start of one of the ...

'It doesna matter what it is. You've told me. That's enough for now." Outlander by Diana Gabaldon Do you know when I was born?"

"It get's him what he wants." Outlander by Diana Gabaldon "That man doesn't care overmuch for women, does he?"

"If I hadn't had a knife, we'd both be dead now!" Outlander by Diana Gabaldon "What are you waiting for?"

I am re-reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. In the past I read the first four books and then lost track of the series. I am starting over at the beginning to refresh myself with the story. I also picked up The Chalk Circle Man by Fred Vargas at the library today. I have been looking ...

"I looked down in bafflement at the wooden platter before me." Outlander by Diana Gabaldon "But you aren't allowed to flog women, are you?" ...lol..maybe a different take on relish. ...#82 DeltaQueen...how funny is that, I am reading the same book!

"The idea has it's attractions." Outlander by Diana Gabaldon "But you aren't allowed to flog women, are you?" *DeltaQueen...how funny, I am currently reading the same book!

Still in Scotland but now jumping back and forth in time from 1945 to 1743. Yes, I am re-reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.

"No you can't do that. You will damage your shoulder again." Outlander by Diana Gabaldon "Are you going to cut my throat?"

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and Stardust by Neil Gaiman Ummm.... 1.) Both have a main character becoming romantically/physically involved with someone who is not their spouse/soon to be spouse due to some magical circumstances. 2.) Both have witches. 3.) In both, main characters break ...

I was on a mystery kick but I am now getting ready to pick-up where I left off in Outlander. Really good book but I wasn't ready for such a large book @ the time. Now with the cold setting in, I am in the mood for a cozy, long read! ;)

I am finishing up Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and then reading Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr.

BooGirl in Fantasy Forum : Favorite books (Dec 1, 2009, 8:42am)

... Cassandra Clare but my favorite would have to be The Odd Thomas Series by Dean Koontz. I'm currently reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. If you haven't read this book yet, read it!

... I don't get too exercised if things look bleak. But I'll probably cry a river when Rollo, Ian Murray's wolf/dog in the Outlander series, finally goes to the great forest in the sky.

I love Outlander and I think the whole series is a wonderfully romantic love story, not a just a lust story, but there is plenty of overt lust going on in these books, so anyone looking for something not too explicit ought to know that ahead of time.

Last summer I posted my curiosity about Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. I was greatly encouraged to give it a try... so I did. And I finished the first book in the series today, at lunch. And I be no giving away any of the plot here ye ken. Apart from thinking and reading in a Scottish ...

... 2 that I bought more than 18 months ago on sale that I haven't finished: Atlas Shrugged (72 hours) and the 2nd book in the Outlander series (~45 hours)... when I got them I thought the length would be enjoyable. Turns out I don't have that much attention span. The other "older purchases" are ...

Best to read it in order. It starts with Outlander; the Dragonfly in Amber and Voyager. The Fiery Cross is next, and then A Breath of Snow and Ashes. You won't be sorry, the series is pretty addictive. I am just about finished with the latest An Echo in the Bone

#188: Jealous! I have listened to Outlander, which I own, and A Breath of Snow and Ashes, which my library has, in addition to An Echo in the Bone. But I generally find audiobooks to be prohibitively expensive (I used a gift card for Outlander). I've had trouble finding the earlier books in ...

... Porter is 'the voice' of Claire, so who am I to argue?) BTW - audiobooks were the way I found the series. I checked Outlander out from the library and renewed it again and again to be able to re-listen to it, finally broke down and bought the audiobook and the print version, and have ...

... just shed a few tears reading It Had to be You and that book was mostly funny. For full-out sobbing, I guess most of the Outlander books leave me with puffy eyes and a headache.

Gone With the Wind and Outlander, but particularly Dragonfly in Amber. I get teary eyed at least once in all the Bridgerton books, they all seem to have that one poignant moment.

The first one to come to mind is Outlander I love Jaime !!

... by Paullina Simons makes me weep like a baby... Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, too, lol. Any book from the Outlander series can get tears outta me. And of course, I've begun rereading it from the beginning. Just finished An Echo in the Bone you see, and I wanted to refresh ...

hey guys! just had my first cry from a book in Outlander and that was more than just sniffles! That was definitely because of both her writing and the character of Jaimie... I must always like it when the guy falls apart a little because I also loved and couldn't catch my breath with Kingdom ...

Hello Susan. Finally catching up with your thread and some of your reads. I am so glad that you enjoyed Outlander. I keep waiting for a break in my group reads so I can start this series again, but it is looking like mid year or so now. I just let myself get too caught up in other things, ...

... read the book in print just to get that horrible voice out of my head! misshollyhock, glad to hear you're into the Outlander series too, it's my favorite as well and I have been obsessed with it for over 5 years now. I've listened to the unabridged CD's over and over while in my car, ...

... MDLady, my daughter has been trying to read the series but has 2 small little boys & works full time. So I just got her Outlander on CD since she is a drug rep and spends a lot of time travelling in her car. I can't wait to give it to her.

hey I just finished Outlander and it was amazing!!! I have to admit though, I was a little sick to my stomach a little near the end...I thought it was pretty traumatizing...but it was a great intense read. I just bought the next one! Dragonfly in Amber and i'm super excited. I can't ...

hey guys, I was just wondering if Diana Gabaldon's Lord John series has romance in it like Outlander?

misshollyhock, I'm so glad you like Outlander. The series is one of my all time favorites. I just finished Suite 606, a collection of short stories containing a J.D. Robb story I had not read. That one was fairly disappointing but the last story by Mary Kay McComas was wonderful. I ...

... in paperback last week of November. I'll go fish in my big, BIG, tbr-pile! :) >Misshollyhock : Happy reading with Outlander! I still remember when I read it the first time way back in 1993! I agree with scrpo1027 and you that Gabaldon is an extraordinary writer!

MDLady in Read YA Lit : YA literary crushes (Oct 30, 2009, 11:29am)

When I was a YA I had a HUGE crush on the Hardy Boys. Now that I am older, it has to be Jamie Fraser from Outlander.

... reading lol... IAD Series by Kressley Cole - actually I have loved all her books BDB Series by J.R. Ward Outlander by Diana Gabaldon Daughters of the Glen by Melissa Mayhue Gardella Vampire Chronicles by Colleen Gleason Carpathian Series by Christine Fee ...

... I also really like Nicholas Brisbane from Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn. But, I'll forever love Jamie from Outlander and Mr. Darcy!

I'm with MD Lady.. Gabaldon's, "Outlander" series is tops for me. I've tried a few of the other series mentioned here, but just haven't gotten that "oomph" that Gabaldon delivers. It's going to kill me - after reading the last book An Echo In The Bone - to wait another year or two for the ...

... for a series is Sara Donati's Wilderness series. No time travel, but just as action packed and interesting as the Outlander series. Of course Outlander comes first, no comparison to anything.

For me, hands down, it's the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I admit that the size scared me away at first but It hasn't kept me from rereading them again and again. When I start a new reread, I bring new people along for the ride ;) Lam, I am looking in to the medieval series you ...

Just finishing Outlander /Gil Adamson and am glad I persevered. I'll never go through the Crowsnest past and look at it the same!! Am also listening to Creepers by David Morrell and am enjoying it but find I have to keep going back to pick up bits I've missed.

If anyone happens upon Outlander please let me know... been dying to get into this series!

Ooh, wonderful news about Outlander. I have it on my TBR pile too, and am planning to take it with me when I go to Puerto Rico for 10 days in January. Thanks for the recommendation!

You've been on the fence about this book for a long while, Susan. I'm glad you decided to take Outlander on vacation with you; it's perfect for that. I really loved the first book of this series too. (True confession: I even read it more than once.) It's funny that you said that "Claire does ...

Hi, Kate! Welcome to both LT and the 50-book thread. You might like Outlander by Dianne Gabaldon. It's heavy on romance and involves time travel. I also loved To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis. (All of the books I've read by Willis include time travel.) Keep posting and I ...

Hello Belva, Hope things are still looking good for Crissy. Too Many Books!! I have Outlander on my shelf. I bought it a couple of months ago and I really can't wait to start it. I keep running across such enthusiastic comments. My library books keep getting in the way and I wish I could ...

#22 & 23--I suspect I will tire of the Outlander story before the end of the series. I did find Jamie more entertaining than Frank, as characters, so Claire's emotional shift there didn't much bother me. Frank was so wholly self-absorbed in his work that he was sort of a non-entity by the time Cla ...

... of problems and a scruffy looking scarf). I am going to start again with a different wool. As for reading - I've started Cross Stitch by Diana Gabaldon. Not my usual read, but it's fun so far.

... two close fits: 1) The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Sparks - the only error being that she is not alive; or 2) Outlander by Diana Gabaldon - the only error being that the edition I have was published in 1998, not 1999. This was a lot of fun!

>20: Somehow, I managed to avoid the Outlander bug. I could never understand how easily she forgot her 20th century guy and fell for the one who treated her a bit like dirt. I've just never had the slightest inclination to pick up the sequel.

I am a huge fan of the Outlander series, too. I am currently reading An Echo in the Bone and loving it.

I have to sheepishly admit to reading the third book in the Outlander series by Dianne Gabaldon. I said I wasn't going to read any more of them, but she was speaking at my favorite bookstore and one of the women who worked there said it was her favorite one. It was good escapist fun, ...

Mark, I just can't imagine Outlander holding the same appeal for you! It's such an obvious romance, but much, much better than a Harlequin-type romance, Sydamy. If you liked The Time Travelers Wife, you'll love Outlander. Money-back guarantee! Right, Belva? ;-)

Hey Belva- I'm with Joanne! I have a copy of Outlander but have never read it! Maybe one day??

Hiya Belva! I enjoyed reading the discussion about Outlander. I haven't read it but I did buy a copy a month or so ago as I thought it sounded rather intriguing. So I'm glad to read that you are such a fan (7 times!) of the series and I am looking forward to it even more now! And it ...

Outlander suffered from tedious overextension to me, too. 1632 I remember reading and liking well enough, but I can't now remember why. Seems unlikely that I'd enjoy a re-read, based on the synopsis.

My two least favourites are 1632 and Outlander. I couldn't bring myself to finish either of them.

There are so many but 1 comes to mind.. Jack Randall from Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. He was a character you just hated.

... to being one of those people who liked The Time Traveler's Wife. Love your rant! Hmmm. I wonder what you think of Outlander--the one by Diana Gabaldon, not Gil Adamson?

I'm pretty sure this is not the Outlander series having read all of them, but if you ever do figure it out, I'd love to know! This sounds like a great series.

Hi -- I responded on the other post. I'm not sure of all the details but Diana Gabaldon's Outlander is one of a series, I believe, with some common elements -- the first one is a woman who touches a boulder while on a honeymoon, and is sent back in time where she falls in love.

what does "Renov" mean? Anyway arguably the most famous of these is Diana Gabaldon's Outlander which indeed had a woman traveling back in time by stumbling into some kind of natural ring or boulder/cave type thing. And it is a romance.

Hi calm; How are you doing? I like how you have set up your thread. Nice to see you have been enjoying the Gabaldon Outlander series. The next one comes out here next month and I can hardly wait. I have had it on pre-order for over a year now. When a new one of hers comes out I always ...

I read Outlander at a former girlfriend's request. Can't say I loved it, though I did finish it. I kept wondering how she could forget her 20th century husband so easily. I doubt I'll pick up any of the sequels unless I'm stuck at some vacation place and they're the only thing there.

I started to dig in again on Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon I loved Outlander but after reading that I wanted some quick light-hearted books - I have 3 more books coming in from Amazon so until they get here I keep going back and reading bit by bit on Dragonfly.

This is hard, but I'll give it a shot: Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon The Wallflowers series by Lisa Kleypas, particularly Devil in Winter In Death series by J.D. Robb Slightly series by Mary Balogh Chicago Stars series by Susan Elizabeth Phillips

Outlander was my favorite in the series, but the others are well worth the time.

I'm almost done with Outlander and am so excited to start the second book, but I hear it's harder to get through than Outlander, but that it's completely worth it.

bib - The Outlander series is one of my favorites! Hope you continue to enjoy!!

... trying to slog my way through my ER, but it's awful! So I'm going to review what I've read of it and I'm back to Outlander, which I'm enjoying even more than before, seeing as it's both well-written and interesting!

I guess I can jump in here... I read Diana Gabaldon's Outlander. I had picked it up by "accident" because I would NEVER read historical fiction (or traditional romance), in fact, I disliked the sci-fi To Say Nothing of the Dog because it had a historical setting and normally I love sci-fi and ...

I picked up Pride and Prejudice and Zombies this weekend, so now I'm debating putting aside Outlander in favor of that. Haven't decided yet. I won't have time to read today anyway, have to clean the apartment, unpack and do all that other stuff I didn't get a chance to do yet.

... Charlaine Harris, they're romance, mystery and vampires all rolled into one. For romance and time travel you can't beat Outlander by Diana Gabaldon! Wonderful stuff, Jamie will make you weak in the knees ;-) lol

I myself would love to read more romances where the male is younger than the female. After Outlander I kinda think that a younger man is the way to go. :D

I am loving Outlander right now, sis. How far are you? We'll talk about it tomorrow. Also reading Dry right now. Really enjoying it.

... Also read Demigod Files last night. I kinda wish I'd read that before Olympian, but oh well. I'll be going back to Outlander now. I figure the fact that I keep thinking about it means that it was drawing me in pretty well. I'm going to save the Trollope I started on the plane for the ...

I read the first three Gabaldon books - Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, and Voyager. Started Drums of Autumn and got totally bored. The storyline became increasingly strange and unbelievable. #206 - Rodo I liked Lord John and the Private Matter, haven't read anything else.

... read Gabaldons Lord John books and am probably the only person who liked them and didn't even feel tempted to read the Outlander series. I didn't like Jamie, and the more my friends tell me about Claire and the story the less inclined I am to read the books.

... is about 550 & I was thinking wow thats bigger than the majority of books I end up reading. Good example of very big book Outlander by Dianna Gabaldon and her 2nd book in the series Dragonfly in Amber is huge. But, they are such good books you have no problem flying right through them. ...

Just started Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. Good so far!

Yes, I finished Outlander in March. I'm going to start Voyager soon, but after the third book I'm going to take a little break from the series. I'll wait until I'm back in the US for the summer before reading the others. Now I'm reading Sense and Sensibility, but I'm having a hard time ...

Oops! Sorry about the double posting. >32. Can't beat P&P!

I hope you read Outlander first? That was a terrific historical romance novel. You and nannybebette should have fun talking. She just finished the sixth book in the series.

... Some chick lit (Something Borrowed and Something Blue (I am going to a wedding)), a fantasy/romance/historical fiction (Outlander), some Brit Lit (He Knew He was Right) and some mystery, which will be whatever Amelia Peabody I get up to by then and the next one.

First 3 books of the Outlander series were clearly the most enjoyable so far! "Best" in a literary sense was Mother Night.

1760's Scotland and the West Indies in Voyager, book 3 of the Outlander series and lovin every minute of it! Talk about escapism...

#11 Voyager book 3 of the Outlander series.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I tried so hard to like this book. I needed something light and fluffy in an attempt to destress before finals. Not a huge fan of most recently published romances out there, but hey, the series seems to be pretty well-regarded. Then 300 pages in the "hero" turned ...

    17. Labyrinth by Kate Mosse Got suckered in by the "combination of Outlander and The Da Vinci Code" I saw in a review when the book first came out... Another book that really could have used some serious shortening with no really big payoff...

Because I had to take it back to the library before I actually got chance to read it I bought Cross Stitch by Diana Gabaldon today, and also Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen which was recommended on here.

judy - I think you'll like Building Coffins. It is definitely mystic realism at is rawest. The whole Outlander series is kind of a fluke for me, as I've never read (actually, I've stayed away from) romance books. I think my heritage comes into a big account there! Go Frasers!

... how we can rate some books equally highly (Ines of My Soul amongst others), yet others we can disagree on quite markedly (Outlander for example). Based on your review, I have placed The Sound of Building Coffins on hold at the library. It sounds wonderful! Judy

#39 Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon More fun than Outlander, action-packed and entertaining. I have one quibble with the book, and it's probably because I don't read romance novels and am unfamiliar with the genre. The tragic, passionate, across-the-centuries love story seems to me ...

I loved the Outlander series and remember Heyer's Regency novels as fantastic fun! As for now, I have left 1800's England and Jane Austen behind as I finished The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen and I am now about to enter contemporary Rome with Clash of Civilizations over an Elevator in Piazza ...

I'll join the club as well! I finished Outlander last week, and have read a couple chapters of Dragonfly in Amber. I can't wait to have time to sit down and enjoy it, but don't think I'll have time to do that until the middle of the month! I also want to finish North and South, which takes ...

I would have to say parts in Outlander by Diana Gabaldon such an all around good story!!

    17. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon I first learned about this book through LT, and I was expecting a lot. I wasn’t disappointed! Outlander has history, romance, time travel (from 1945 to 1743), adventure, and wonderful characters that I plan to continue following through the rest of ...

Lamplight I really enjoyed Outlander, hope you did, too. I found it read like something that John Ford would have liked to have turned into a movie. The author's descriptive passages of scenery and conditions during harsh winters were exceptional. My only criticism was of a personal ...

I'm still reading Outlander by Gil Adamson. It's very good; I'm slow because I read in snatched minutes. I'm also reading Vanishing Acts by Jodi Picoult. In my TBR pile is Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson. Two of the three are library books, and one is overdue already. Sigh. ...

... Kresley Cole has a MacCarrick Brothers series starting with If You Dare. They are very, very good. There is also the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon which is absolutely wonderful. History, Romance, Time Travel. I liked a Harlequin book called Taming the Highlander by Terri Brisbi ...

And how about the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon - history, time travel, romance, war, kilts - something for everyone!

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon Eva Luna by Isabel Allende The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove by Christopher Moore Of Love and Other Demons by Gabriel Garcia Marquez ...and #5 will soon be Dragonfly in Amber by Gabaldon.

I'm still reading Dragonfly in Amber, which is better than Outlander, IMO. I'm feeling very rollercoasterish (or sine wave-ish) WRT Jamie in this book, though. First he'll be awesomely amazing, then he'll say or do something stupid or borderline abusive, then he'll be amazing, then he'll say or ...

I'm late to the #92-98 Outlander discussion: I think I get what you're trying to say, Cait86... that with your modern sensibilities, it bothered you that he beat her. Oh, Moomin, Cross Stitch is Outlander's name abroad, isn't it? I loved that book!

Eruntane - I started The Idiot, but alas, got sidetracked by Outlander. It had a lot of promise, and I was intrigued as to how it might end. Kira-Kira was good. It started very well, but kind of ran out of steam as the main problem increased. The climax was treated a little flatly, but ...

From the library I have now added Cold Comfort Farm, Cross Stitch and Bitten to the ridiculous backlog, and I bought Fairytale Detectives because it sounded fab from some of the descriptions on here.

OK, now that I've read Outlander, I'm definitely adding Jamie!

    >10 That sounds interesting, Gwen, now I have to go wishlist it! It also occurred to me that the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon features time travel, though these books are much more romances (or maybe romantic adventure) than what one thinks of as sci fi. Still, they are very popular.

... book that uses sex as a crutch. Sometimes it enhances the storyline but too often it is just.. you know. I absolutely love Outlander and will at some point read the Lord John books.

#77: I do not care for the Lord John books. I infinitely prefer the Outlander series. I agree with you about the second Lord John book - it was almost as if Gabaldon was testing the reader to see just how much leeway she would be given.

... - I think I will pass on the book, since I love watching the movie (it is on right now, actually, LOL). I agree with Outlander - I read it this year, and was mixed. I will probably try the next one just to make sure, but romance is definitely a genre that is personal. Oh, Chapters ...

I'm home sick today as my medication wreaks havoc on my digestive tract, but I've managed to get quite a ways into Outlander between those unfortunate interruptions. I'm one of those people who will always read books with a distinctive dialect "aloud" in my brain, and I'm having a lot of fun ...

"I didn't do anything out of the way. It was only luck that I have small hands." Outlander by Diana Gabaldon "What is--it isn't, is it?"

Favorites include: Outlander, Gone With the Wind, Angelique to name three off the top of my head. How about you? What kind do you like?

"Not just at present, Chuckie." Outlander

I'm about to leave Berkeley and New Orleans in The Courts of Love and finally go to Scotland in Outlander. For a while now, I've been stuck in Russia with The Idiot.

What did you think of Outlander? I've never read it, but I keep seeing it here on LT.

#7 Outlander finally. I've only owned it for years... I'm really taking my time with Outlander and enjoying it. It's been years since I've read The Wolf and the Dove and all the historical romances of my 20's. Gabaldon has done a very good job. Pretty sure I'll read book 2 as well.

Oh! I'm starting Outlander next! I have about 80 pages left in The Courts of Love, which is not historical fiction but is certainly making me re-live the nineties, especially the Oklahoma City bombing which is only alluded to.

#279: Jayde, As far as the narration goes, Davina Porter has no peer in doing the Outlander books. Even Gabaldon has said in The Outlandish Companion that to her, Porter is Claire. The only quibble I have with Porter's narration, and it is a minor one, is that she does not seem to me to ...

I don't know if I could watch an Outlander movie. It would mess up the book and I love the book.

I have read Outlander , and I'm waiting with bated breath for the next instalment to come out. One of my favorites in the series is Voyager, makes me cry every time. Are you a fan of Gone With the Wind?

I too am a big fan of Outlander's unabridged audiobooks, I listen to them contantly in my car commuting back and forth in one huge loop. Davina Porter is Claire. I'm so used to her voice that I fear a movie will ruin it for me too - though from what I hear a full feature movie is still ...

#275: One of the reasons I hope they never make movies of the Outlander series is because I feel like I know the characters so well, even their appearances. I think a movie version would just ruin the books for me. As far as the audiobooks go, I first discovered Outlander that way - I ...

I consider the Outlander series some of my favorite reads. I love her writing and her characters.
