None. None. Little Stories is Jeff Roberts’ collection of shorts stories, which he penned as an undergraduate. As with all stories collections there are some hits and some misses, but as a whole this composite is worth stocking on the shelves of your bookstore or library. In “A Question of Perspective” tells of a man and his girlfriend discussing his teenage son, and the other denizens of the neighborhood. “Iowa City” (my personal favorite) poetically discusses the authors love affaire with the title city. “Most Likely to Succeed” describes a fallen man and his experiences with life (and a prostitute). These are not the type of light reading stories you peruse while in a checkout line… instead they are the type of philosophical work you might read in college, or over a glass of brandy in front of a fire. Roberts really shows his merit when it comes to his descriptions in his stories. Even where the dialog might run a little dry, the imagery will draw you back in time and time again. I’d love to see what Roberts could do with a longer piece- a novella or novel… with more room to develop the characters I could see him becoming a force to be reckoned with.
"The hallmark of Roberts' collection is his strong writing. He captures scenes with expertise, and his characters come to life through the dialogue. The author's stories are moving, light-hearted when appropriate, and explicitly human. In its best moments the powerful stories quickly become page turners once you get into the text."
