When the dragon Sui Gen awakens from his 100 years sleep, who does the entire village turn to for help, but the village painter. Known far and wide for his skills with the brush and knowledge of heroes past, Mei Fei must look within himself to find the key to defeating the fearsome dragon. This book makes a wonderful, fun, and interactive read aloud up to fourth grade. ( )

Gorgeous illustrations, innovative design with the fold-out pages (although ours got nested incorrectly and I ended up reading a later page ahead of an earlier page). I love the tale of ingenuity, discovering the depths of one's own strength, and learning what's truly important. ( )

Marguerite Davol tells the story of a Chinese scroll painter who is asked to help his village get rid of the dragon, Sui Jen who was awakened from a hundred years sleep. The artist Mi Fei goes to the mountain and uses his painting to complete three tasks that the dragon says would put him back to sleep. I loved the illustration in this book. The pictures fold out to bigger pictures. Grades K - 3. ( )

Mi Fei is a scroll painter, but when asked to confront a dragon, he goes for love of his village. The dragon asks him to hold fire and air with paper, but the last thing he must hold with the paper is the strongest thing in the world. He discovers that it is love, and puts it on the paper with a drawing and poem. Beautiful and unique illustrations. ( )
