40. Flyboys by James Bradley
It's pretty rare when the nice lady at your local bookstore (Sleepy Hollow Books in Midland MI) loans you a book that she wants you to read. Joey asked me to read this and I put it off for a while because I knew that there would be alot about the war atrocities on ... ... between the two Uplift trilogies (great, but long and involved) by reading Flags of our Fathers. Also on the list are Flyboys by the same guy, A Bridge To Far and a first edition Mysterious Affair at Styles. It says copyright 1920 so what else can I assume? If I had enjoyed that last ... ... get to it, but I just had to own it.
At the same wonderful bookshelf I found in hardcover also a book for my husband, Flyboys by James Bradley. My husband has suddenly developed a deep and abiding book hunger and I try to appease him with books I think he will find interesting, i.e., ... ... books on WWII (although he is more concerned with the Holocaust than the war itself), Days of Anguish, Days of Hope, Flyboys, and With the Old Breed.
I hope that is enough to get you started.
ETA: I cannot find the correct Touchstone for Lost. The book I am referring to is one ... ... mentioned this just now. I just finished three books set on Pacific Islands The Flamboya Tree, A Town Like Alice, and Flyboys, a True Story of Courage. Two were non-fiction, but all examined the treatment of the island populations by the Japanese during WWII. It was very interesting and ... ... want to spend the money until I knew whether it was any good.
Finished The Flamboya Tree yesterday, will finished Flyboys, a True Story of Courage today, and then to add to the war-reading jag I'm on I'll start A Piece of My Heart about nurses in Vietnam. Tomorrow I'll start The Rid ... In Australia with A Town Like Alice and on my way to the Pacific (near Iwo Jima) with Flyboys, a True Story of Courage by James Bradley.
Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein

The Winds of War by Herman Wouk
Captains and Kings by Taylor Caldwell
Flags Of Our Fathers by James Bradley
Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem

The Godfather by Mario Puzo Flyboys by James Bradley given to me by a fellow train traveler. Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein
Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradley
Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond
The Dogs of War by Frederick Forsyth
Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon ... lit, concise and oh so effective
"The Devil's Oasis" by Bartle Bull - third in historical trilogy set in N. Africa
"Flyboys" by James Bradley - amazing WWII history (Pacific war)
"The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo - touching story about a toy rabbit
... ... War Stories: Remembering World War II by Elizabeth Mullener
And next I'm going to start either Ghost Soldiers or Flyboys ... they won't talk about it see if they will write it down and put it away so it can be found some day.
Last year I heard James Bradley speak about researching his father's career about which he knew almost nothing until after he died and then found out he was one of the flag raisers on Iwo Jim ... I just finished Flyboys by James Bradley. And I am starting Power Faith and Fantasy: America in the Middle East 1776 to the Present by Michael Oren. I'm about 100 pages in and am finding it very fascinating! I am an admittedly weak student of history and I believe that this history ... Finished Flyboys by James Bradley tonight.

Going to the Friends of the Library sale tomorrow morning. Hope to bag a bunch of books. Though mostly that is where I find the classics I am reading, but I do pull some non-fiction out of there as well.
Bill ... McCullough today. You can read the review here;
