I'm running to Eragon by Christopher Paolini. I drive to The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. I'm halfway through both and I wish I had picked some lighter reading! I knew The Jungle wouldn't be an uplifting story, but geez! Sometimes you need a pick-me-up after work.
I remember Eragon being an intensely mediocre rehash of the fantasy genre in general. It was mildly entertaining, but certainly not _good_.

If you like fantasy, Eragon is an example of all the fantasy tropes done correctly and you should read it. Don't bother with Brisingr, it reads like an RPG guide.
There is also Eragon and its sequels, and also Twilight Child its also a classic. Oh yeah! have you read DragonLance? its really good.

For example, Eragon . Oh my gosh. I absolutely hate that book! I have a friends that love it but honestly. What annoyed me most was his long descriptions using uncommon words and the words from made up fantasy languages that you had to check the ...

Any suggestions? We have to be careful because of the corporate environment to not have books that are too violent or racy.
I just watched the movie of Eragon on DVD for the first time with my son who has read the book at least 7 or 8 times. I liked the movie but out of the 100+ discrepancies he noted throughout the movie (yes, he counted every one), the one that annoyed him the most was probably the fact that he ...
I enjoyed the story in Eragon , but I thought the writing was terrible. So many extraneous words. Paolini was evidently trying to make his writing lush and evocative, but he just overdid it. Hopefully he'll improve with time.
Yes, Eragon was full of cliches, but without cliches, what is a genre anyway? And I have an unhealthy obsession with dragons for someone my age, so I tend to pick up any dragon book. And I tend to get attached to characters. Eragon himself, yes, too many "just happens to be perfect," but I ...
I agree about Eragon as well, I thought I was probably the only one in the world who disliked it, actually I'm reading it now and struggling to get through it. We can't keep it on the selves here and students line up to get it but really I don't know what all the hype is about.

I'm reading Eragon and it's a surprisingly good read.
It's the books between "baby" books and Eragon I'm talking about -- books like Gilly Hopkins, Jacob Have I loved, The Giver, Fat Kid Rules the World, etc. The Newbery and Young Reader's Choice books, for example.

We are reading Eragon by Christopher Paolini.
well, the eragon movie sucked. it might have been an ok movie by itself, but they changed everything, and it was cast all wrong. i hope they wont make a sequel, but they probably wont, because the 1st one sucked.

I've also been reading science fiction and fantasy most of my life, and I have to say "Steer your sister away from Eragon at all costs!"
That's my personal bias, though.

I would have to say that recently for me Eragon was the worst - I'm not saying the book was great, but it was an enjoyable escapist tale. The film just didn't make any sense to me.
Eragon --really lame movie from an overrated book. Special effects couldn't save it.

I went into Walmart today for an oil change and waled out with Eragon ... what can I say, paper backs were 25% off and I want to see what all the hype is about. I was surprised at how thick the book is, though I'm not sure why.

I haven't read the Eragon movie thread over on the YA board. I didn't want to ruin the movie for myself :-) I have read comments from a few people who liked the film in other places.
I'm still looking forward to seeing it. I'm thinking maybe Christmas day.
My son has been trying to get me to read Eragon since I bought it for him, but I haven't yet. I'm going to see the movie and then I might read it. I think Christopher Paolini was 15 when he wrote the book. From what I heard his parents owned a small self-publishing company. It garnered so ...
I picked up Eragon for my son for Christmas a few years ago partially based on the blue dragon on the cover. The deciding factor of me buying it (at the time no one had really heard of it) was that the writer was a teenager.

I like the flying scene in Eragon , and I agree that young Saphira is soooooooo cute.
The downside of the film is that Eragon didn't name her 'Saphira', all of a sudden she just called herself that. I think the naming process is crucial, because that's the first time Eragon--and readers--realize ...

So I went to see the movie based on Eragon this weekend and left the theater wanting to throw something, hard. I'm usually not overly harsh in my criticisms but that was total and utter crap. I expected it to be choppy - you can't do a 500+ book justice in an hour and 40 minutes, but I didn't ...

Well, my opinion of Eragon is pretty widely known, and if not, it probably will be soon, but I'll chime in anyway. I read the book, and enjoyed it. Honestly, I thought it borrowed a bit too much from other fantasy works (Lord of the Rings, Dinotopia, Earthsea to be exact) however I enjoyed it ...
I heard that they are playing the trailer for Blood and chocolate along with Eragon , so now I have another reason to go see the film!
I went to see Eragon Saturday afternoon, and I really enjoyed the movie, but I must say I sort of expected more of a climax. But, I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next two. I haven't read the books...that's not really my forte in reading, but my husband has read both, and is ...
... That was actually the deciding factor, but very cool cover certainly didn't hurt.
Luckily my son loved the book, Eragon .
I was supposed to go see Eragon , but my teen is now grounded and can't go. When I gave my 6 y.o. the option he opted for Happy Feet instead.
I may have to go see Eragon on Christmas day just as a present to myself.
I am curious if anyone has gone to see Eragon yet? Was it anywhere close to the book? I haven't seen any reviews on it yet so I am waiting till I hear what other people thought of it.
ditto. I read eragon to my campers this summer when they wouldn't go to sleep. it knocked them right out.
Well, my oldest dd finished Eragon so that she can see the movie! (That's a deal we have--if it's coming out as a movie, they can't go to see it until they read the book first. ;o) She will be starting Hitty: Her First Hundred Years because she and I are going to do a short unit study on it ...

My wife loves Eragon and its sequel. Personally, it looks very derivative to me. I mean, there's only so much that can be done with fantasy, and I don't fault the author for that (in fact, I applaud him for his success at such a young age), but as was the case with Harry Potter, everyone acts ...

I enjoy the books as well, though it does seem that the younger readers enjoy them far more. Last year we read Eragon in book club at the junior high where I teach. Everyone really got into them and most of the kids bought the first two in the series and read Eldest on their own. Last year's ...

Honestly, I'm on the fence on Eragon . Now that the movie is coming out, I think I'll get another copy and reread it, and possibly read Eldest as well. It kind of reminded me of a poorly done rewrite of Earthsea and Lord of the Rings tom me. As far as YA books I really don't like, I read the ...

Everybody has their own opinion. It certainly didn't hurt Christopher Paolini to self-publish Eragon considering it not only became a best seller, but the movie is coming out next month (which I am looking forward to).
Of course, that is one example of probably thousands of self-published ...
... 20 pages. It's a sweet book, although DiCamillo's references to "reader" and "dear reader" are starting to wear thin.
Eragon is still on the back burner, along with In cold blood.
I started Eragon by Christopher Paolini a week ago and am now down to the last few pages. The book is really good but I have been distracted by doing other things. Not sure what book I will read next.
I loved A Great and Terrible Beauty, Rebel Angels, and Eragon !
I didn't enjoy King Dork very much and I think I am the minority on that one. I also didn't love Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and I KNOW I am in the minority on that one. I think most people really liked it.
... Blood, Heart's Blood and Sending of Dragons by Jane Yolen. The description on the books kind of reminded me of Eragon which is one of his favorite books. I hope he likes them!

Kidsilkhaze: Eragon ??!!? Ohh that pains me. How far did you get? A couple of people at our library have been saying it is slow getting into it which I agree, but overall I enjoyed it so much.

Hello. I am rereading Eragon right now and I just noticed something. I know that Eragon borrows a lot of concepts from existing fantasy titles. One of which is the concept of an ancient language being the language of magic.

I second Eragon and Eldest - I thought they were pretty good, especially given the age of the author, although derivative, but my youngest son (now 14) LOVES them and is impatient for the third book and the movie.

I'm currently reading The Naming by Alison Croggon. It's pretty good so far, although I'm finding it similar to Eragon in that it's about a young person his/her true self through a long quest to save the world. At least this book has a heroine...it's just music instead of dragons!
... believe Lloyd Alexander, Ursula Leguin and David Eddings have used it. It's the premise of the very successful Eragon . Even George Lucas used it in the first Star Wars flick. I'm not saying there's anything innately wrong with it, just that it's overused.

My 15 y.o. son's choices are the Pendragon series by D.J. MacHale, Ranger's Apprentice by John Flanagan and Eragon /Eldest by Christopher Paolini.
Well, it isn't surprising that Eragon seems similar to Lord of the Rings and Star Wars (among others). Christopher Paolini is writing a fairly classic coming-of-age fantasy work, so you're bound to have many similarities with previously published works.
It's next to impossible to be truly ...
