A fictionalized biography of our second president, concentrating on the years leading up to American independence. I'm normally not a fan of fact/fiction hybrids, but this one felt authentic (Bowen was a respected writer of popular history) and was beautifully, movingly written. ( )

Much better than David McCullough's later biography of Adams. But, also, compliment's McCullough's nicely since this book covers Adam's life upto the Revolution and McCullough's book focuses on Adam's life after the Revolution. ( )

Book description

Amazon.com Book Description (ISBN 0316103853, Hardcover)

In this highly praised biography of the formative years of the America's second president, Mrs. Bowen portrays John Adams within the context of colonial America and examines the momentous events that forged a new nation and the character of our second president. This is an old-fashioned biography, beautifully written, passionately interested in its subject. Mrs. Bowen's primary aim is to convey the temper of mind and intellectual curiosity of a man who many consider the most brilliant individual to have ever held the high office of the presidency.
