This book is a great resource to use in a classroom with student who use English as a second language. This boo is about a girl who is in a classroom and is asked to share something with the class about where she is from. She is unable to commnicate and therefore, must use broken English. This book can also be used to help bring discussion and curiosty among student in a classroom abotu different cultures and diversity in general. I think this book also can be used in all grades. It is very important for chldren to realize they live in a diverse country and world.

This book can be read to all students. It talks about a girl who has trouble speaking English in her classroom but with help from her teacher and other students communication she gets better. This book would be great to use in a classroom with students that speak different languages and are trying to learn English as their first language.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0940112086, Paperback)

Set in the Bronx during the 1950s, when postwar immigrant children were placed in their first American classrooms, this delightful story tells of the riotous linguistic misunderstandings of Josephine’s first day of school. The daughter of savvy Italian engineers, Josephine has lived in the city long enough to have learned a few words in English, but is overcome when her teacher makes her stand up in front of the class and tell about her life in Italy—in English, of course. The result is a charming tale of adventures and multicultural miscommunications as Josephine attempts to make herself understood. Children will come to understand that sometimes people underestimate the talent and dignity of newcomers to the United States and will embark on a poignant journey as Josephine tells her incredible story the best way she knows how and attempts to understand her English-speaking teacher and classmates.
