After reading and loving two of Marcia Lynn McClure's previous works (Divine Deception and The Visions of Ransom Lake), I couldn't wait to read The Highwayman of Tanglewood. Although the writing is engaging and the characters well-drawn, I couldn't help being very disappointed in the way the story developed. First of all, I suspected the highwayman's true identity too early in the story to allow any real suspense regarding his identity. The way the plot progressed only confirmed that my earlier suspicions were true. That led me to dislike Faris for not being as smart a heroine as I'd like. If I, a mere reader, could figure out the highwayman's identity, why couldn't she? I wasn't disappointed at all in his identity but only wish there were more suspense. Villainous characters (both male and female) frequently harm Faris and require her to need a champion and creates a good deal of interest. (I enjoyed seeing her saved by the highwayman and by the family who'd saved her from the "the rat" in the beginning.) It's an enjoyable story, but one that just didn't hold my interest like McClure's other works. In short, it is forgettable. If you'd like to see an example of what this author is truly capable of, I'd highly recommend The Visions of Ransom Lake. So far, it's my favorite of hers. A soft romance - very clean as far as romances go - in fact it feels like a throwback to the romances of a hundred years ago. As I am not the target audience I found the content a bit too mushy at times but did enjoy the adventure and the relationship conflicts. Probably would not read again as the length vs. the enjoyment don't mesh well - I guess I really am an action fan. no reviews | add a review

This is a Robyn Hood type story that keeps one guessing who the hero really is until the very end. It is full of sensuality, romance, intrigue and suspense with a smattering of humor. Very well-written she always seems to be able to really ‘bring the reader into’ the story. The characters really come to life, the personalities and surrounding scenes are eloquently portrayed.
The title fits well and so does the book cover. However, I feel the darkness of it will allow potential readers to pass it by.
My review of this book gives it a hearty Five Stars rating. ( )
