The main couple in this book is Paul Haggerty and Vanessa Rutledge. Paul was Vanessa's husband's best friend. Paul promised Matt he would take care of Vanni if anything happened to him, but Paul never expected to have to follow through on the promise. Now, he is. His problem is that he has been in love with Vanni since the moment he set eyes on her and he feels guilty for loving her with Matt gone. Plus, other complications get in the way for him to act on his feelings for her.
This book has so much going on...Paul and Vanni's story is the 'main' story, but there was so much else going on in Virgin River that it was difficult to keep track of everything. I didn't really care for Paul (he is my least favorite hero of all the VR books) and the story between him and Vanni isn't developed enough. It just didn't grab me with all the other stuff going on, too.
Honestly, the theme of this book should be babies. It is all about babies...having them, taking care of them, wanting them, not wanting them...it was a little overwhelming to me.
I'm rating this book compared to the other books in the series. It was still good because it keeps up with Virgin River, but I just didn't connect with some of the characters and it was too much. Not a favorite of the series, but still worth the read. (
