An account from a member of the "other ranks" of service in the Royal Welch Fusiliers during World War I. There is a great deal of mud, grit and black humour in the story, as well as some unflinching opinions, good and bad, on the officers of the regiment and the generals of the war. It's rather interesting to read certain parts of it against Robert Graves' "Goodbye to All That." Graves had been an officer in the same regiment, and indeed is mentioned a few times in the book (positively, along with Siegfried Sassoon). Most history doesn't have the sheer amount of mud this one does, so it is (curious choice of words) refreshing. ( ) no reviews | add a review
Arguably the greatest of all published memoirs of the Great War, Old Soldiers Never Die is Private Frank Richards' classic account of the war from the standpoint of the regular soldier, and a moving tribute to the army that died on the Western Front in 1914. No library descriptions found. |
