Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein
read in the 60s when everybody else was reading it too and saying 'grok.'
I reread Stranger in a Strange Land a few years ago, and yes, it is seriously dated. I couldn't believe that I had loved it so much as a teen though the Dune books were my favourites back then. Not sure if I read the uncut version, but probably not as it was an old musty paperback.
Book 102: Stranger in a Strange Land , Robert Heinlein - Forrest Gump with magic powers is lectured at repeatedly by lecherous old Randian disciple, while Perky Women bow and scrape for all the men. And everyone talks like they just fell out of a bad 1940s screwball comedy...
I've just started Stranger in a Strange Land , and... oh dear. It opens with reportage, and all the characters talk like they fell out of a 1940s film. This is actually a reread, but it must be more than 20 years since I last read it. Even then I was aware of its reputation, but I don't think I ...

Not naive, so much, I think, as a Stranger in a Strange Land .

... still quite good reading after 40, IMO, & The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is a perennial favorite of mine. I don't think Stranger in a Strange Land aged as well as it could have. Much of what made it stand out when it was written is old hat now.
Two very different books. Stranger in a Strange Land is religious commentary, while Moon is a Harsh Mistress is political commentary. "Stranger" is long and meandering, while "Moon" is much more linear and to the point. I liked "Moon" much better, but that's just me.
... my love of Science Fiction these days. Latest books on the list are Robert Heinleins The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and Stranger in a Strange Land
Looking forward to hearing everyone's recommendations and some conversation!

Middlesex and The Color Purple are both magnificent. Guns, Germs and Steel and The Road were well worth reading. Stranger in a Strange Land - very boring the second time (read it first maybe 30 years ago and loved it).
You have quite a heavy load there for next year!
Stranger in A Strange Land by Robert Heinlein
I loved Stranger in a Strange Land when I read it a few decades ago. Last year, not so much. It's a great story that should have been told in about 1/3 of the length. The out-of-date sexist mores are pretty tough to take, but they'd be less annoying without the out-of-date endless ...
