Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian (the book is much better than the movie...)

... good to know. I have a friend who is crazy about that series, so I tried it and wasn't too impressed. I stopped after Master and Commander. Maybe I'll give the series another chance.

... Virga Justine by Lawrence Durrell Culpeper's Herbal by Nicholas Culpeper Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian (from Folio) Melville: Pierre, Israel Potter... by Herman Melville (from LOA)

Re #6 Master and Commander series I had seen the movie and didn't particularly like it, so was reluctant to read the book. Then a good friend (who loves the series & has read it 2 or 3 times) gave me the first 3 books and a companion guide. Her advice to me was, "Don't give up after the ...

... No need to hurry, entries will be accepted until October 18th at 8 am PDT. For example: I expected to really like Master and Commander by Patrick O’Brian. I enjoy nautical tales and the Napoleonic era is one of my favorites. C. S. Forester’s Horatio Hornblower books have been ...

... Pyrates by George MacDonald Fraser. Because I have only read one other Flashman and I wanted to give it another go. Master and Commander by Patrick O’Brian. Because it is the first book in the Aubrey-Maturin series and I like historical novels and I feel the call of the sea! The ...

Just to get things bumped up - Master and Commander?

Hi! I just joined this group. Anyway, I just finished the first three Aubrey/Maturin books (Master and Commander, Post Captain, and HMS Surprise) and am taking a little break. This seemed like a good place to break, as the next book starts a few years after the end of HMS Surprise. I'm ...

Shogun by James Clavell The Lord of the Rings and Philosophy by Gregory Cassham Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian The Princess Bride by William Goldman High Rhulain by Brian Jacques (a rhulain is a tribal leader)

Re #30: I suppose there is a big audience for Master and Commander, although I share your feeling that it was a tad too salty for this lubber. I also found that while the initial volume works very well as a novel that can stand on its own, many of the later volumes in the series seemed like ...

... is worth some $254.00. Though I like Titian as much as the next guy, I think I too will hold off. Good idea including Master and Commander, for me it's one of those books that I want desperately to love (since I'm a huge fan of 18th century lit and Jane Austen and rollicking adventures of ...

I'm particularly excited about Master and Commander, also The Language Instinct and The Analects and Blake. I really want to know about The Master and Margarita!! My renewal offer is the Folio Soc Diary and The History of Venice in Painting. Those of you that have done this before, ...

I didn't abandon Master and Commander, but I can't say I enjoyed it all that much. I felt very much like I was reading nonfiction; I learned a lot, but I was never really engaged. I plan to read the next book eventually, but I think it's probably going to take me a while to make the leap. I ...

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one re: Master and Commander! All the nautical terms made me feel like I was reading in a foreign language that I didn't really understand.

I too couldn't read Master and Commander. After so many rave reviews, I was expecting to at least be able to read it, but I'm sure I didn't make page 10. Gave it to my husband, he couldn't do it either. Gave it away to a charity bookshop right around the time the movie came out, so I'm sure ...

I abandoned Master and Commander and gave it away. After the movie came out I thought I should give it another go. So, I bought another copy. It's still staring at me.

I remember stopping Master and Commander when I found a sentence that had 37 words describing the weather, and the sentence was longer still. That was a long time ago, though, so I may try to reread it. If I still can't get through it, I have a friend who owns almost every book in the series on ...

I quit reading Master and Commander after about 100 pages. I don't think it's crap; it just wasn't for me. The many other unread books on my shelves were calling :)

Just started reading O'Brian! I'm on Post Captain. I listened to the audiobook version of Master and Commander after seeing the film (great soundtrack by the way!) I actually find it easier to read than listen to, and I didn't like the way the narrator did Stephen's voice. I never thought I ...

Russell Crowe as Captain Jack Aubrey in Master and Commander, the Far Side of the World. He is perfect. Paul Bettany is not Stephen Maturin, but the horrid picture Patrick O'Brian paints of his beloved doctor--there is no one on earth who looks that unpleasant.

What books do you read when there are no decent fantasies available? I love the Aubrey / Maturin books (starting with Master and Commander) by Patrick O'Brien, nautical adventures set during the Napoleonic wars. It's not a fantasy, but it still transports you to another world... I also ...

Ik werk mij de laatste maanden in snel tempo door de Aubrey/ Maturin-serie van Patrick O'Brian (het eerste deel is Master and Commander). Not so much a long series (20 books) as a world to live in, Patrick O' Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series (Master and Commander, etc, ) is superb. Jack Aubrey is a captain in the early 19th century Royal Navy; Stephen Maturin is his ship's surgeon. I'm on my second trip through the series.

... tried Horatio Hornblower and whattayacallit - you know - the guys from the Patrick O'Brien book (only the first one, Master and Commander), but all the ship/naval stuff always got in my way. Lambdin has just as many ship-type references, but somehow they don't interfere with a really ...

A) General Fiction: 3. Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian

14. Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian I can't say this will be one of my favorites for 2008. It took far too long to read because I'm afraid I kept on getting a bit bored of it. While I appreciate the language, the scope, and the accuracy of detail, it was too much. In truth, not ...

I'm a ship rat, so I read Master and Commander over the summer on a sailing trip. I would recommend that book...it's amazing!!! I saw the movie just a few months ago, and I liked how they portrayed all the relationships. I just didn't like the fact that it was obvious the actors for Aubrey ...

compski I started with Master and Commander which is when he gets his first command (it isn't the first in the series) and I struggled a lot through all the nautical language for a bit and then it sort of clicked. Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian. I am reading it very very slowly because I am enjoying it so much. I'm inordinately excited that there are nineteen more in the series.
