After that, I'll second the recommendations for Batman: Hush, Batman: Year One, Dark Knight Returns and Killing Joke. ...
For example, Maus is a graphic novel, or OGN. Brian K. Vaughan's Pride of Baghdad is also an OGN. As is Alan Moore's The Killing Joke. On the other hand, his Watchmen is not truly a graphic novel (although it is, of course, original -- though, to dissect things even further, it is not a ... ... Year One is Miller at his scintillating finest. when he's on, he's REALLY on. (but when he's off it kinda sucks.)
The Killing Joke Tragic, classic, for me the definitive Batman-Joker story. plus it's Alan Moore.
