Gertrude Tammen speaks from experience. As a young girl she personally saw what can happen so easily with a charismatic leader, fear and hate. Knowing that the story is real makes it all the more horrific. Gertrude tells this story very well, portraying the propaganda of the time in the deeds and beliefs that resulted in the action taken against family, friends, and neighbors. The reader sees it through a child's eyes and understanding, questioning and fear. Although written as a book for children, I certainly recommend it to anyone. ( )
