Part of the Aussie Nibbles easy readers series, this lovely little story is written in simple language with soft, fuzzy illustrations in pencil. Moloney's idea of having the narrator talk to the reader, showing them how to make duck sounds on their palm (with a lot of spit!) and then holding them off until the right time is a cute one which will get young children involved in the story and waiting for their moment to participate. Young readers will like Jock's courage while tricking the old man, although parents might not like the way in which Jock tricks him (trips him and throws his whistle into the pond, then shows him where he lives in warning).
