The story starts with the cat sittting on the mat. The cat continues to sit on things like food, the chair and the bed. Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0207182590, Paperback)

The cat sat on the mat. What's so exceptional about that. This story is full of visual gags about a cat who must be the centre of attention. The text plays on one of the first sentences children are taught and the nature of cats. As the action develops we see the family react to their cat.
