A strange and quite original little book that raises interesting questions, but ultimately doesn't have much to say about them. In the far future, a distant planet, which had been forcibly settled by genetically altered humans some six thousand years ago, approaches crisis on several fronts. Our protagonist has been sent to spy on an eccentric genius who reanimates corpses to serve as actors in dramatic presentations (since it's illegal for live people to entertain by playing a role).

There are several layers of story here; it's one of those novels that, the more you think about it, the more you find. Symbolism is used effectively. The prose is somewhat mannered, but not to the point of distraction. ( )
