Highly entertaining, violent story as Miami detective Tony Rome tries to find out who killed a stripper whose body Rome found (with its feet encased in concrete) while scuba diving. He spends the entire book getting beat up, drinking brandy, and swimming for his life. But all the while, he is putting together the clues that unravel the mystery. So even though this book has one of those scenes near the end when the detective explains everything, in this case it is so logical and well-plotted that you nod your head. If you are the type that reads to figure things out and not just for pleasure, you might have already come to the same conclusion. There are lots of colorful characters here, particularly Gronsky, a dangerous but likable ex-con with murder on his mind, and the Miami Beach setting is great. (Author Anthony Rome is a pseudonym for Marvin Albert, who wrote only three books in this marvelous series. If you like them, check out his later Stone Angel series.) ( )
