The second VizBig edition of Fushigi Yuugi covers a lot of ground, containing volumes 4-6 (Bandit, Rival and Summoner) of the graphic novels. It begins with Tamahome leaving for Qu-Dong, offering himself up as a hostage for Yui, to stop the raids on border villages. Miaka and the others have no choice but to search for the remaining celestial warriors, the constellations of Suzaku, that will allow her to summon the god. This review contains SPOILERS.

Chichiri uses his shape-shifting powers to take the Emperor's place on the throne, allowing Hotohori to accompany Miaka on her quest. With Tamahome gone, Hotohori returns to professing his devotion to the Priestess of Suzaku! But it isn't long before they are kidnapped by mountain bandits. The bandits are having their own problems, but Miaka is able to find the next constellation of Suzaku - Tasuki, a fiery-tempered warrior who wields an iron fan that shoots fire.

A mysterious plague is gripping the small town of Chang-Hung, and Miaka falls victim, losing her sight! A very pretty woman named Shao-Huan seems to have an incredible healing power, but she can't cure illness, only revive the dead. Hotohori can't bring himself to kill the girl he loves, even with Shao-Huan's promise that she can bring Miaka back at full health, so he sets out to convince a reluctant hermit doctor to help them. The reluctant hermit turns out to be their next celestial warrior, the healer, Mitsukake. Shao-Huan has been dead for a year, and the woman Miaka is staying with has been possessed by a plague demon that has turned the villagers she "revived" into zombies.

A young flutist presents himself as the final Constellation of Suzaku, Chiriko. With all the celestial warriors located, all that remains is to rescue Tamahome from Qu-Dong. Yui has been trying to steal Tamahome from Miaka, but he remains loyal to her - until Yui and her sinister general, Nakago, drug and brainwash him into hating the Priestess of Suzaku!

Fushigi Yuugi continues to provide great action and drama as the plot twists and turns, and unexpected hurdles arise for Miaka and her companions. The romance between Miaka and Tamahome develops as they face the challenges of separation and temptation, but their relationship is very sweet. This is an exciting and well-written manga with wide appeal. Recommended. ( )
