The Beagle is part of the series Learning About Dogs. This is a book that reluctant readers will enjoy for its simplicity, easy language and information about a popular breed of dog. The table of contents is clear about the contents of the book. Chapters are titled and subtitled with good organization for research. There are photographs with captions on every other page. A helpful photo diagram of the parts of the beagle's body is included along with a "Quick facts about dogs" section. A glossary, index and bibliography of books and internet resources is included as well as addresses for students to send off for further information. The intended audience is upper elementary with lower level readability. It was published in 1998, but since this kind of basic information doesn't change much over time, it is considered to remain a good source. The author consulted with the Education Chairman of the National Beagle Club for accuracy.
