It's been too many years since I read this, so I'll use the blurb:

Madigan Maloney's life in a small Maryland town takes on new excitement when Clint, a handsome stranger, rents a room in her grandmother's house. Madigan's mother died when she was little and she's never met her father. It isn't long before she convinces herself that Clint is her father, come to claim his long-lost daughter. Madigan confides in her best friend, Angie, who scoffs at the notion, but Madigan doesn't give up hope and continues to observe Dlint carefully. Meanwhile, she and Angie go about their usual summer activities--hanging out in the drugstore, babysitting for Angie's sister. As they do, they uncover fresh clues about Clint and his activities, some of them disturbing. Finally Madigan follows him one step too farand discovers how dangerous it is to assume things about people--especially strangers. ( )

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0380706776, Paperback)

The StrangerHe was busy reading the drugstore bulletin board when Madigan first saw him. He sure was good looking! His hair was dark and he had a full beard with a mustache that curled up on the ends and hid his mouth, just as his silver sunglasses hid his eyes. Then he walked right up to the soda fountain where Madigan and her friend Angie were sipping cherry Cokes, and asked for directions to Madigan's house!

Now the handsome "mystery man" is renting a room in her very own home -- and Madigan is about to take some dangerous risks to find who he is...
