Unlike the first two books of the series, I was a bit fonder of the heroine here. Despite her condescending attitude toward the “lower class”, which can be forgiven by upbringing in her century, I thought Devonny was pretty likable and adapted well to the circumstances of the story. In this particular book there were some more surprising character developments than in the past ones. I certainly didn’t expect as much from Winnie as we wound up getting. My favorite character, despite his very small part in the story, had to be the young Italian stoneworker, Gianni Annello. I was a bit disappointed that we never did find out why his name turned up in the future. Overall, I think this one was my favorite story yet of the series despite the absence of my previous favorite character. (
