( )The adventure continues when the kids encounter more elves and goblins while trying to find out what happened to the field guide. When their sister disappears, the twins have to come up with a plan to get her back, not knowing that they’re leaving the rest of their family in harms way. I felt really badly for Jared in this book. How come he is the "trouble maker"? He does seem to have the knack of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, though. Can't wait for number 5! Picks up right where the third book leaves off. The Grace children are in hot water with the Faerie kingdom and they have lost the book besides. In this book the children find them selves captured by Dwarfs and held beneath the earth. They manages to escape only to come face to face with the true mastermind of evil, Mulgarath. What will happen? Will the Grace children be able to prevent a take over of the earth by the land of Fae? Will they even survive? I am looking forward to reading book 5. Summary: Jared Grace keeps getting in trouble at school, even though it’s not his fault, but he has no time to worry about a tiny little thing like expulsion now… his older sister Mallory has just been kidnapped by the Dwarves, who are demanding the book as ransom, and Jared and Simon must go deep underground to rescue her - and save themselves. Review: The action and adventure is just as good as in the previous installments, but I felt like a lot of the mysteries and hints that were brought up in the third book were ignored here in favor of more chase scenes. I also liked the bits of emotional pathos that were dropped in between Jared and his mother, but they, too quickly fell by the wayside. This late in the game (relatively speaking) I wanted a little bit more explanation and depth and a little less solid action-suspense, but there is a bit of a grading curve, seeing as how it’s written for 8-year-olds. It’s still a fun read, but this one left me wondering if the final book is really going to be able to wrap up all of the little thread-lets we’ve been given so far. 4 out of 5 stars. Recommendation: Not quite as good as the previous three, but the enjoyment-to-time-investment factor is still high enough to make it a good read. no reviews | add a review

The Grace kids (9-year-old twins Simon and Jared, and 13-year-old Mallory) might think that things have finally quieted down for them, but the nefarious faerie world has many more surprises in store. In the second chapter, titled, "IN WHICH the Grace twins are triplets," a mysterious and menacing shape-shifter shows up at Mallory's fencing match--and before Simon and Jared can suss out what's up, their sister disappears, presumably kidnapped. Eager to recover Mallory, the two descend into a strange subterranean world beneath a nearby quarry, only to find themselves prisoners and then privy to a wicked (and almost unbelievable) plan. The twins do end up tracking down Mallory, but only in very peculiar circumstances--not the least of which that she's wearing a dress.
Author Holly Black once again skillfully manages to weave in plenty of creepy details (including a bloody final chapter) without whitewashing or leaving young readers feeling too creeped out--and she gets able assistance from Tony DeTerlizzi's ever-evocative pen-and-ink drawings (especially in the looming menace of the Mulgarath). Fans of the series will have a hard time waiting for the final installment, titled fittingly, ominously, The Wrath of Mulgarath. (Ages 6 to 10) --Paul Hughes
