Possssssibly I need to get over myself a little, because every issue I find myself thinking that the best work in n+1 is from occasional contributors—the bright new light who holds Kunkel bright in memory from a slow-burning flirtation at grad school,* perhaps, and overlooks the vacuity of his modern-life bestiaries and tired comment on food and porn (though not yet food porn—and I know I’m judging the production of this still moderately ephemeral form the lit mag a bit harshly—if n+1 from 2008 didn’t say the tedioubvious in 2013, probably whatever it was saying wouldn’t have been vital five years ago either); or the brilliant Viennese playwright who likes the idea that we might all be brilliant together in the kaffeehaeuser again with our journals spread out between us, but not in Wien this time of course coz NAZIS, and gulls himself into seeing another young Trotsky from the Café Central in the Marxist exquisite who approaches him on behalf of the neoliberalYorker publishing-industrial elite; or David Harvey, who is of course committed to explaining the world in venues like this as a moral-political matter; or the “Anonymous Hedge Fund Manager” who seems to fancy himself a praeceptor of the present moment (which is noble service, whatever his other “services” to the global economy might have been, and even if you get a bit the sense he was just hanging around waiting for his interviewer to tell him he has a “beautiful mind.”

I’m saying the editors are better at hauling in good contribs than they are when dressing their own minor sociological insights for young people up in theorese. But hell, they’re just middle-class kids growing up in public, which—let’s face it—we all are these days (some of us even at 33!), even if we can’t all afford it. I like this mag and there’s no need to be sour.

*Elif Batuman. The flirtation is (I assume) my own fevered invention. (Tho Elif let me down a bit this time with her OH THE HELLSCAPE that was my paid copyediting job for a big NYC book publisher that you would kill to get as an unpaid internship in 2013 and her IT WAS TIME TO GET SERIOUS AND GET A JOB so I did my PhD in comp lit.

**Thomas Bernhard. Upon investigation, it seems he died in 1989, so I guess I have the owners of the rights to thank. ( )
