A newly hatched duckling soon loses sight of its mother with threating skies looming overhead. Is she in the grass? On the path? Behind the tree? Where could she be? Soon enough mother duck and little duckling are reunited with siblings curious about little duck's adventure. Bedded down for the night safe and sound, they all en their first day with sweet dreams. This enchanting picture book will keep little ones demanding, "Again, again!" of this rhyming text over and over. The words lyrically play across the double-spread lushly illustrated pages. First time children's author, Skalak, invites children to chant fun words and phrases such as, "Eggs start splitting. Crack, crack crack," and "Heads down under, rear ends up. Tasty pondweeds. Glup, glup, glup." The award winning illustrations lure the reader to follow little ducking page after page, even touching the page when all are snuggled in their nest. I found this to be such a beautiful book that I wished I had a little one next to me as I read it because I wanted to watch their reaction. Highly recommended. Ages 3-5. ( )
