I got the illustrated edition of this second book in the Harry Potter series for Christmas, and it was a good excuse to revisit the story. Jim Kay's illustrations are a great complement to J. K. Rowling's words, which are filled with images themselves. I tried to read this one a little at a time, but got pulled in at the end. ( )

Reading the words written from J.K Rowling's pen is a truly magical experience. Her language coils and flares like a beautiful plant that wildly twist around every which way. Harry, in his second year at Hogwarts, must find out who is behind very mysterious and dark occurrences. And he must do so fast; the life of his friends are at stake! Desperate along with Harry to unbury the truth in all the madness that is taking place, you are taken on rides over England in a car that soon lands in a very angry, flailing tree, and into the Forbidden Forest where you meet spiders as big as houses. The questions at hand are 1) Where is the chamber of secrets? 2) Who is opening it? And 3) What monster lurks inside? Brave and determined to set things right again, Harry follows a sketchy trail of clues and past secrets to save his friends and put an end to the reign of terror. 4/5 stars. ( )

Harry was back at his aunt and uncle's house (the Dursleys). Harry got his cousin's old bedroom but he was locked in and hardly got fed. Mr. Dursley had his boss and his wife over for dinner. Harry couldn't do anything bad or loud or else he will be punished. Harry is locked in his room, when Dobby, the house elf came to his room! Harry is told not to go back to Hogwarts because there is an evil plot by Dobby! Harry runs downstairs and Dobby floats a cake onto Mr. Dursley's boss's wife's head. Harry was in big trouble, he ran upstairs locked his door again with magic and hid. Ron and his brothers, Fred and George were driving their dad's flying car! They came by Harry's room and broke the bars, and Harry crawled into the car and escaped. Harry could now get to Hogwarts for year 2! At Hogwarts Harry was walking through the hall with Ron and Hermione, his friend girl when he heard a voice no one else could hear. Harry follows the voice and when it end they look around and see a message on the wall. It was written in blood, it said " The Chamber of Secrets has been opened, enemies of the heir beware." Mrs. Norris, the pet cat of the caretaker, Filch was hanging on the nearby statue, PETRIFIED! Several other people got petrified and so did Hermione! She had her notes in her hand, apparently she thought the thing terrorizing people was traveling through the plumbing pipes. Another note appeared in blood on the wall that said "Her skeleton will lie in the chamber forever!" Harry and Ron were led to moaning Myrtle's (a ghost who lived in the closed girls bathroom on the 2nd floor) bathroom. She showed them how to get into the chamber, she saw someone do it before. The sink opened up and Harry and Ron slid down into the chamber. Harry opened a door and the stones around it cracked and crumbled separating Ron and Harry! Harry was alone in the chamber! He walked forward and saw a boy, not just any boy but Tom Riddle. Jinny Ron's little sister was lying on the ground unconscious! Tom revealed his identity, he was Lord Voldemort the evil man who killed several people including his own parents. Harry was going over to Jinny before Tom started talking, he said something foreign he couldn't make it out. All of a sudden a giant snake, a Basilisk was coming out of a statue, coming for him! Harry ran and all of a sudden a phoenix, Headmaster Dumbledore's phoenix came with the sorting hat and dropped it. The phoenix attacked the basilisk and blinded him, Harry looked at the hat again and a sword popped out of it! The sword of Gryffindor! That's what it was,he pulled the sword out and got ready to fight. The basilisk could smell Harry, he ran up the side of the statue so he was face to face with the basilisk. He shoved the sword right into the basilisk's top mouth and killed it, during the process he got stabbed by a tooth. The tooth injected poison into Harry, he pulled the tooth out and ran over to Jinny. Jinny had a book Harry took it and then Tom yelled "DON'T TOUCH THAT!" Harry stabbed the tooth into the book and Tom yelled and dissolved into nothingness. The phoenix came over to Harry cried on him and healed the poisoned wound. The phoenix carries Harry, Ginny, and Ron out of the chamber. Harry went to Dumbledore and told him what happened. Dobby was there but he had to leave. Harry put his sock into a book of Dobby's master. His master gives him the books which frees Dobby from his slavery because he got some clothing.

THE HARRY POTTER SERIES IS AMAZING! It is a great book series for any readers who are willing to read long books. I usually don't have the patience but this book picks up fast! These books have high lexile and reading score. I think these books should get their stamp back even though it's British and so is the author. I think everybody should read these books in their life time at least once. I'm very pleased with this book. ( )

The atmosphere Rowling creates is unique; the story whizzes along; Harry is an unassuming and completely sympathetic hero. But, truth to tell, you may feel as if you’ve read it all before. Rowling clearly hit on a winning formula with the first Harry Potter book; the second book — though still great fun — feels a tad, well, formulaic.

It's hard to fall in love with an earnest, appealing young hero like Harry Potter and then to watch helplessly as he steps into terrible danger! And in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the much anticipated sequel to the award-winning Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, he is in terrible danger indeed. As if it's not bad enough that after a long summer with the horrid Dursleys he is thwarted in his attempts to hop the train to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to begin his second year. But when his only transportation option is a magical flying car, it is just his luck to crash into a valuable (but clearly vexed) Whomping Willow. Still, all this seems like a day in the park compared to what happens that fall within the haunted halls of Hogwarts.

Chilling, malevolent voices whisper from the walls only to Harry, and it seems certain that his classmate Draco Malfoy is out to get him. Soon it's not just Harry who is worried about survival, as dreadful things begin to happen at Hogwarts. The mysteriously gleaming, foot-high words on the wall proclaim, "The Chamber of Secrets Has Been Opened. Enemies of the Heir, Beware." But what exactly does it mean? Harry, Hermione, and Ron do everything that is wizardly possible--including risking their own lives--to solve this 50-year-old, seemingly deadly mystery. This deliciously suspenseful novel is every bit as gripping, imaginative, and creepy as the first; familiar student concerns--fierce rivalry, blush-inducing crushes, pedantic professors--seamlessly intertwine with the bizarre, horrific, fantastical, or just plain funny. Once again, Rowling writes with a combination of wit, whimsy, and a touch of the macabre that will leave readers young and old desperate for the next installment. (Ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson
