I haven't been able to put it down. Clearly written, the book begins American local history at the beginning - in England. After a brief introduction to the concepts of local history, it takes the reader on a quick tour and shows how American history formed as a product of English history. Then it goes full force into historical sources, the historical method and how to do research, and how to make those tough judgment calls about what to include. It sits you down at a keyboard to show how computers are used in history and, while it won't make you a statistician, you'll be able to understand how those mysterious statistics about history are produced, and perhaps produce a few of your own. The book then turns to the writing of history, the process, the types of choices a historian has to make.

Not written only for the avocational local historian, it's content is so very, very applicable to genealogists and anyone involved in writing a family history. The occasional difference between local and family history can be so small as to be non-existent at times; when it's larger, it's called out and solutions are presented that are satisfactory for all.

It's new and well worth the read. Right now, only Amazon (and the author's website) carry it; still, it's worth the time and the surprisingly small amount of cash spent. ( )
