Albeit the title of this little volume is almost as long as the whole book,it is nevertheless another gem from J.L.Carr. The title in fact says it all - a collection of sayings and quotations from and about the Duke, both in his positions as Commander -in- Chief of the British Army and as Prime Minister. He was known with affection by the army as 'Old Nosey',due to his large crooked nose.
There are of course the well known quotations included, such as "Publish and be Damned" as well as many lesser known ones such as (on the Prince Regent) "Damme! he looks and talks so like old Falstaff I'm ashamed to enter a room with him."
There are also some anecdotes included, such as the one that ends the book -"He died suddenly at Walmer Castle,Deal,at 7 o'clock in the evening of 14th September,1852,aged 83 years and 4 months. On his arm was found a bracelet placed there by his wife when they were young." This I found extremely touching, and was indeed completely unknown to me. ( )
