Almost 40 years in Manhattan, author Richard Morris has achieved the career and fame he'd envisioned for himself. Wealthy but artistically embittered, he's at his home upstate recuperating from heart surgery and nursing resentment toward his publisher and readers who've left his star to wane. He finds journals he kept when he arrived in New York in the late '70s and is both fascinated and repelled by the young man he sees: naive and egotistically misguided, the younger Richard compulsively absorbs everything around him--good and bad. As he reads about himself, written by himself, he discovers that the pivotal moments of self-invention--and self-realization--occur far outside the conventional chronology of a lifetime.
