Hannah Ives and family are strong-armed by her bride-to-be sister Ruth into ballroom dancing classes in advance of the big wedding. Ruth’s fiancé Hutch gave up ballroom competition in favor of law school, so it doesn’t take him long to get back in the groove. With Ruth, the lessons don’t go all that well. But when the dance instructors, Kay and Jay Giannoti suggest that Ruth and Hutch have what it takes to audition for a televised dance competition, they’re both on board.

Then Ruth is sidelined with a broken leg suffered in a mugging. Jay coaxes Hutch to audition anyway, but with a new partner, a woman whose husband and dancing partner is being deployed in Iraq. Hannah wonders whether Ruth’s mugging might have been arranged – but by whom? And when one of the characters dies under suspicious circumstances, Hannah’s sleuthing instincts go into high gear.

I’ve always liked Marcia Talley’s books, which are well written, with great characters and sensory detail that makes both people and places come alive. Dead Man Dancing’s plot is engaging and I’d categorize it as near cozy – with just a few instances of coarse language. New readers will want to return to earlier books in this series to learn Hannah’s backstory as a cancer survivor.
