Sophie has a new baby brother and instantly has a hard time adjusting to role of big sister and wants to know when the baby is "going back." As time goes by, her feelings towards her brother change.

This story is about Sophie and her new baby brother. Her baby brother comes around winter time when the first snow falls, and just like the weather, she is not happy about him being there. She asks her mother when he is going to go back, but her mother tells her he is there to stay forever. Eventually, spring time shows up, and Sophie's feelings towards her brother have changed. I would read this to a kindergarten classroom. I found this book at the Pierce College library in the ECE section.

With a relatively new baby we are currently dealing with the sibling jealousy problem. Can’t say we are totally sorted at present but I did find a good book yesterday called Sophie & The New Baby by Laurence and Catherine Anholt that on first impressions looks quite useful.

Alot of books about new babies tend to be ones that help kids understand what is in mummy’s tummy and don’t really cover how it will affect the older child other than the nice bits like they can help mummy and daddy and give the baby cuddles. Sophie & The New Baby actually covers the bit about the older child showing jealousy and the baby not being everything they hoped for initially as babies are rather demanding and can’t do all the playing that the older child might like them to. This is a good example of a book you can share with a child to help them understand an “issue”. ( )
