... by Kate DiCamillo. Just finished reading this one aloud tonight. We enjoyed it, but I didn't love it the way I loved Despereaux or Edward Tulane. You get a glimpse (and the book jacket tells you) that the story is filled with hope and magic, but the majority of it is very gloomy and ...

Just finished The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. I'm generally a big fan of "animal fantasies" but I thought this one was just a little too cutesy. Just starting The Court of the Air by Stephen Hunt. I'm just a little ways into it, but so far it's great. It reminds me a bit of Jonatha ...

I recently read some of Kate Dicamillo's works. She is a great writer. I believe The Tale of Despereaux is coming out as a movie soon. I've tried to obtain this book from my local library, but it must be popular because it is never on the shelf.

23) The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo It's a kids book about a mouse who rescues a princess. I didn't think it was as good as the Redwall books (though I must admit that I am about 20 years beyond its suggested age range), but it was still pretty darn good.

I've never read The Tale of Despereaux, but this thread has conviced me I must read it. They are holding it at the library for me. I'll pick it up tomorrow! My "to be read" pile is never going to go away!

I actually prefer The Tale of Despereaux to The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, though both were good. DiCamillo is an excellent author for middle-elementary ages.

I saw in your profile that you liked The Tale of Despereaux, so on the basis of that I highly recommend the Redwall books by Brian Jacques, Watership Down by Richard Adams, and Once Upon a Marigold by Jean Ferris. I think you'll like them!
