After waiting a couple of weeks, this book arrived yesterday, and I blew through it. It is still a wonderful book to read, and was worth the price.
The main character, Matilda, is Norman but married to a Saxon at the ripe old age of 14. Her new husband is enamored of her, and gives her a 'morning gift' the day after their marriage: an island in the fens of England, to "escape to" in time of need.
The story follows Matilda through her handling as a prize by those in power, giving her in marriage to two men she not only does not want, but despises.
It's also a fairly good book about the politics of the time, mid twelfth century England. If you can find it, read it. ( )
