... 10 days. Right now my lads, the little traitors, are reading all my old Stephen King books. It's my fault, I gave Liam SALEM'S LOT, telling him it was a good summer read and then he passed it on to his brother, who devoured it during a 12-hour bus ride from northern Manitoba.
I haven't ... ... The Stand and It are my two favorites also. They are however, both very long and maybe not the best for a first timer. Salem's Lot is a great place to start, or something newer like Duma Key If you are ok with more of a fantasy twist try The Gunslinger. My all time favorite King book has to be Salem's Lot, but be prepared to leave the lights on at night. ... - there is a severe lack of editing in much of the later work. I can see some of the early novels, like The Shining or Salem's Lot, being published as classics, due to their importance as horror novels. Others may be published as genre classics.
Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner!!!
Yes, Salem's Lot is the correct answer and I believe your even right about the connotation of the text as well..... it's been awhile for me, but I think it was the young pretty girl in the story that the main character had a thing for.
Anyways, TheBentley ... ... I don't have it on my shelves. But I'm thinking that passage sounds a lot like the death of a vampire. I'm gonna guess Salem's Lot. ... that you will catch up. His stuff is usually pretty dense with lots of major and secondary characters. He really admired 'Salem's Lot and has written several novels in a similar vein.
If you want to try some of his novels I would suggest Ghost Story, Koko or Mr. X. I'm new to the group, but I think your quote is from the wonderful Salem's Lot. If I win I have a great quote I'd love to put out there. You know, I love Stephen King, and I'll admit that some of his older work sent a definite chill up my spine--Salem's Lot comes to mind. But I've read a lot of horror, and I think the only two things I've ever read that actually scared me were In Cold Blood and The Collector of Hearts, ... ... whole series. One of the short novels in Hearts in Atlantis also relates to these characters. I would suggest reading Salem's Lot in between Wizard and Glass and The Wolves of the Calla. Also, there is a short story in Legends about Roland, the Gunslinger, called "The Little Sisters ... it's Salem's Lot, but The Gunslinger is a good guess 'Salem's Lot ? ... write endings. So, you're not alone there. Give another of his novels a try and see what you think. I personally liked Salem's Lot, the Shining, and Needful Things a lot for their rich characters and stories. I fyou like fantasy, his Gunslinger series is one of the best fantasy series ... 29. 'Salem's Lot by Stephen King ... me think it might be interesting to be bitten and turned into one of the undead. (The only prior ones were Dracula and Salem's Lot, neither of which featured monsters that were as compelling, or who led such seductive lives, as Louis and Lestat.)
If not then my second guess is Salem's Lot. Im running out of ideas. ... me and held my attention. And I hope you do check out the newest Atwood. It was an interesting read for me.
#16: 'Salem's Lot by Stephen King. This was the first King book that I've read in years. I was actually pretty scared to read it because of all of the things that I've ... ... the related books might be a good idea?
By related books I mean The Stand, Rose Madder, The Eyes of the Dragon, Salems Lot and so forth. I'm looking at the page for the main series now and wondering how to put the graphic novels like The Gunslinger Born in there cleanly. ... a great deal of respect for his older work. They lose interest after about the first five works or so, but Carrie, Salem's Lot, The Shining, and The Dead Zone are not uncommon in college classrooms and scholarly journals. ... What do you remember about your first impressions?
I was about 14 when the 1975 "all black" paperback edition of Salem's Lot came out. I was waiting for some prescription allergy medication, saw the book, was intrigued by the packaging and took it home. Now, keep in mind that this had ... My favorite Stephen King books are his early works - 'Salem's Lot, The Shining, and The Stand. I also loved The Talisman, which he co-wrote with Peter Straub (not one of my favorite authors, but I did enjoy his Ghost Story). Their sequel, Black House, was good, though not as ... ... clearly love each other, so seeing them lie to the others (and themselves) can be hard to take.
Father Callahan, from Salem's Lot, plays a major role in this book (and the coming books), so it might be helpful to have read that before reading this book (but it's definitely not required). ... on my experiences with his other books, but I don't think I felt like it was a disappointment. Haven't gotten around to Salem's Lot or Tommyknockers yet--I tend to take long breaks in between reading his longer works, and those have just never made it quite to the top of the list, though ... ... of his novels (e.g. Roadwork, It), but some of them, I fall in love with and reread in later years (Needful Things, Salem's Lot, The Tommyknockers, Thinner). I agree with the critics that Duma Key is definitely a novel that fits in with King's tradition for greatness in the eerie ... ... already read some Stephen King, but if you haven't, you might want to start with the early stuff--The Shining and/or Salem's Lot. They're just more accessible to non-fans, I think. Even if you don't like King as a writer, you can't fault him as a reader--the man has interesting taste, ... ... spector we have the same books. forget what I said about Duma key, I don't think you would like it. Maybe The Shining, Salem's Lot and Pet Semetary would be a better fit. Heart shaped box was pretty good Dan Simmons does pretty good horror as well. Lemmee know what you think of 'Salem's Lot. If you look back to when Carrie, 'Salem's Lot and The Shining came out, you'll see that he wasn't riding the wave of a horror boom in the book industry. He was creating that wave.
The reason for this ... For me, there are four: Salem's Lot (scared me spitless); The Stand (a desert-island favorite); The Green Mile (horrifying and wonderful, at different times and sometimes at the same time; also loved the movie); The Shawshank Redemption (different from King's usual but amazing; loved the ... ... fort.
#116 Bookmarque - I loved The French Lieutenant's Woman -- one of my all time favorites.
#131 system13 - loved Salem's Lot -- the most chilling King ever written, IMO. I finished 'Salem's Lot today. To all those who wanted to know what I thought of it: I loved it. It ended up being one of those books that I didn't put down much unless I absolutely had to, like during class. (I suppose I could have kept reading then, but the professors probably would not have ... ... I find that interesting - I don't think that particular book as being particularly well-known. I also really liked Salem's Lot and Wizard and Glass. The Dark Tower Series is my favorite. After that though I have a couple, Bag of Bones, It, Gerald's Game, and Salem's Lot. Of course they're all great books.........it's so hard to choose.. I'm about halfway through 'Salem's Lot now, and am really enjoying it. I'm reading King's 'Salem's Lot. It's been on my shelf for about a year now, a Christmas gift. After reading all of the Dark Tower series, then Insomnia, then The Stand, I couldn't bring myself to jump into another Stephen King book. I'm ready for another one now. ... A very close runner up is The Lord of the Rings. My mom's favorite book is The Brothers Karamazov, my grandmother's is Salem's Lot, my best friend's is Reaper Man.

I hate to say it, but I think King peaked early. I don't know about that man. I personally wasn't too crazy about 'Salem's Lot. I hate to say it, but I think King peaked early. Carrie, The Shining, Salem's Lot, those were easily his best works. Most of what he's written since then is too similar in tone and style for me.

carlym, I chose from your tbr tag, hope that's ok. I choose Black Mischief by Evelyn Waugh for you.
When choosing for me please choose from the 'upnext' tag. I had a lot of library books that I had to get read before they were due but I have finally settled in to read my book Salem's Lot . So last night for Halloween we watched all three hours of the '70's miniseries version of 'Salem's Lot.
I know I'm in the minority here, but I really prefer the Nosferatu-like master vampire in the miniseries more than I like the Bela Lugosi knock-off in the original novel.
